I'm spending a little over a month in Xpu-Ha finishing up my full-cave class and diving from August - September. I've been looking around for something more practical and economical than an airport car rental for that amount of time.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations for local car rental agencies?

Thanks in advance!

check expedia. i believe you can rent a car thru them for up to 30 days at a time. for cars in mexico they also usually include the minimum required insurance in their rates.

Who are you diving with? I can almost guarantee you that someone from your dive op has a friend or relative that would be happy to rent you a car for cheap, as long as you're not too picky about the model/year. I've done this in Playa before.

Just be aware that your USA insurance does not work in mexico, if you are in an accident, you will be taken to the police station and will be there until you can prove that you can cover the cost of repair. Mexico insurance is one way to do that and a get out of jail free card.
We make friends with a taxi driver and work out a daily rate, and a call number.

Thanks, well aware of the insurance stipulations in Mexico. Third Party Liability insurance is required, unless you want to deal with what you describe.

Yeah, we've been exploring that. Unfortunately those plans fell through. I found a solution though with a local car rental service though, thanks!

I have used a number of rental car companies over the last 20 plus years in Cancun but Yes Car Rental is the best I have seen by far.

Hertz is one of the few agencies that includes the mandatory Third-Party Liability in their quotes. You can tell because they have an optional supplement. The location in Playa del Carmen is US$836 for a Jetta for the month. That's not so much more than a car payment on a new car. I would guess in the current climate you would be able to hire someone pretty cheaply, though.
