Looking for thoughts and opinions on a mk20 and g500. I have a chance to pick them up for a good price, but have to buy them with out actually seeing them. Are they worth taking a gamble on for $100, If I buy them should they be upgraded or just rebuilt, and what about parts kits?

You're missing a key photo of the Mk20: a view of the saddle connecting the yoke to the body.
A critical recall for the Mk20 was for a yoke bolt replacement to keep from cracking the body.
You can tell if the mod has probably been made if the saddle has two vents (slots) instead of three.

The G500 is a great reg. They took its last iteration and created the iconic S600. The R190 is worthless unless you are able to tune it yourself, in which case it's just fine as an octo.

Parts are easily available. But unless you're doing it yourself, you need to add ~$165 to the cost for service.

Oops! Well, then you're looking at a $60 upgrade min.
Mk20 is a good reg, but this raises questions.
I'd pass.

Parts, maybe. It's been a long, long time. Fourteen years to be exact.
But not labor.
And the shop will want to overhaul it too.

That reg may also have the "problematic" piston in it too which may or may not be warranty covered. (I've seen it go both ways, and depends on the shop).

It needs to be a really sweet deal to be worth it....

Well I told them $20 and they accepted the offer. They are going to throw in a couple other 2nd stages, but no idea what they are.
