A few days ago my Op sent me a message and said port likely to be closed on Sunday. I've Been looking at WindGuru and it looks like a front is headed that way. I'm coming in Sat - Wed. Some of your guys are much better at deciphering weather sites than I......what ya think? Sat & Sun? Just Sat? Neither?

Absolutely. Probably Monday as well.

I'm a big fan of Windguru as are many of the local dive ops. I was there last week of Feb and before I left, I saw a front to hit late Wednesday that looked to blow out Thurs/Friday so we made plans to dive cenotes Thursday. My partners were skeptical but we were sitting in Thirsty Cougar Wednesday evening when the front hit with force and staff scrambled to close doors and recover stuff blown off the bar.

Looks like more chance on Friday but the winds aren't that high, time will tell. Wind direction......

Here is my read for what it's worth... Looking at Windguru today and this far out, I personally say Sat closed (the island has a relatively new harbor captain or whatever they are called) and Sun maybe open. However, you are still a ways out and things can change. If the current prediction generally holds it will then depend on what time the wind shifts late PM Sat/early AM Sun from coming from the N/NE to coming from the E that will allow time for the waves to settle on the west side of the island. Winds can blow like crazy out of the east but that leaves the west side of the island where the diving is at almost a dead calm. Winds out of the east from Monday on look great all week but, unfortunately, like all of us, we have to depart sometime.

Try not to fixate on this even though everyone (including myself) does. Your trip is booked and you'll be diving when you can and when you can't you'll find other things to do.

I have Wind Guru set on miles per hour. If it's really blowing from the north at 11 to 18 by 2pm Friday with expectations to get worse, the Port Captain may well close it by then. Saturday looks like forget-it, but the wind direction Sunday looks favorable - subject to change.

I know wind direction is a major factor, nortes, but what is the typical wind speed to trigger a closure?

12ish

Friday and possibly Saturday are moe at risk - Sunday and beyond look like smooth sailing. 10 or above out of the north, NW or west is a risk of closure

Where do you get the idea that even Monday is at risk? What are you lookiing at? Port will be open Sunday and Monday, and possibly even Saturday unless front stalls and the current forecast changes
