In answer to your question Pemuteran is nearly all boat diving, the diving in the bay is between 3 & 10 minutes and generally all Macro, Menjangan Island is circa 40 minutes by boat and much more coral and fish life focused. I use Bali Diving Academy

Don’t overlook Candidasa as the dives out to Tepekong, Mimpang are very good along with macro at the Jetty

kkshxt-it is open as to what months we will be there. I would like to go when the water is warm (I like 27c and up), possibly not when Bali is full of ppl. What do you suggest?

Luko-Yes I am looking into Komodo and Kalimaya now. Sounds like I should give Pemuteran a miss.

Grm-Is Candidasa part of or very near Padang Bai? or is it a seperate place that I need to look into?

Candi Dasa is a town 20mn drive from Padang Bai, except for a few dive sites, the boat dives are starting from Padang Bai. So they share all the same dive sites, but it will take 20mn drive more plus the hassle from being far from your room whenever you forgot something while everything is walking distance from PB.
I prefer staying in Padang Bai which has a more laid back atmosphere some people like to stay in Candi Dasa because there are bigger resorts, persnnaly I find CD totally chamless with nothing to do there, as it is built along the road going to Tulamben (expect some traffic sometimes) and there is no proper beach anywhere.

From one Florida guy to another, if coming to this part of the world is a once in a lifetime deal, find a way to make Komodo happen. People here can steer you to affordable, safe, and your mind will be blown.

Yes Komodo looks very exciting, I am also now looking at Alor, which looks to be as good or better than Komodo. I would love to go to RA, but I just don't think it is affordable for me.

I have been looking at Red Whale or Divers Paradise for Komodo.(I think I would have to do land based)

In Alor I have been looking at Alor Dive.

Anyone have any feedback on those 3 dive ops?

Luko-I have been looking for Diving Bali but have not found them on the internet yet. Can you tell me thier website or where their dive shop is?

Almitch-why would I want cold water to dive in? just curious

We stayed in Candidasa a few years ago and loved it. But for diving staying in Padang Bai or Tulamben is far far better. We are most unlikely to do Candid as again. There are lovely restuarants but there are also hundreds of cars and motorbikes screaming past on the road outside. Tulamben and PB are both wonderful destinations.

Yes I think my plan right now is to split my time between Tula/Amed, Padang Bai and one of the Nusa islands. It seems to be the best way to cover the diving spots I want to do and be local to them.

hahaha... sorry I probably miswrote my sentence, "Diving Bali" is not a dive shop, I was saying that diving Bali deserves the best dive conditions, better than the lowest budget bule owned dive franchise. You'll have plenty of choice in Tulamben for going local, personally I would recommend Liberty Dive Center where you can dive even if you're not staying at their accoms, The Utama villas have an excellent dive manager who's one of the best guides in Tulamben, otherwise there are some local dive shops like Let's dive Tulamben that will gurantee you excellent dive guides.

"Alor dive" in Alor? which one are you speaking about? if you're looking for the best location/accoms go to Alor divers, if you're looking for cheaper and ecellent too then it's La Ptite Kepa.

Komodo have you been loking for Dragon Dive and Uber Scuba?

If i read this right and you are looking to retire in Indonesia, I would think that you should be able to put in Bali/ Komodo and even Thailand from there, without much hassle.

So maybe you would want to look at the Red Sea as an option, since this will be much harder to get to from Indonesia then the other destinations.
Concerning pelagics, if you take a LOB to the Brothers you might have a chance for Longimanus, which you wont have at Bali etc.
