Why does it need a spool? Isn't it for connecting something that needs to swivel?

It does not need to swivel but it does (because that is the type of connection on that end of a HP hose).

t's just adding unnecessary cost and potential leak points.

Lets see Shearwater Research Perdix AI w/Transmitter $1285.00 vs High Pressure Rubber Hose w/Spool $23.45

2% additional cost. Drop in the bucket.

And when was the last time you had a HP leak??

which is fine so long as they can justify why they're doing it. If not, it's just adding unnecessary cost and potential leak points... For single tank diving, my first stage is canted off at almost a 90* angle, so they can't grab the transmitter.
But @tbone1004 everyone knows that you are special! :rofl3: Mine is canted also, but things happen. He wants to do it that way so why not.

Cheers - M²

p.s. mine is on a hose also. Every transmitter on every reg set.

Hi all,

Just received a new (to me) Perdix AI and will be installing it on a short hose to my first stage. The question I have is what spool should I be using? My only other experience with AI was on my Suunto Vyper Novo which came with the spool/flow restrictor as part of the recall update.

Thanks in advance!

when I bought my short HP hose my LDS figured it out for me and installed my Shearwater transmitter onto my first stage for me so I have no idea. Sorry. :D

I do the direct, I dive multiple reg sets, whim being the deciding factor, I just hand tighten and never had an issue. Truk was the only place I handed off gear to the boat and our guy used the straps not the regulator to lift it out of the water. I’ve used the short hose but just don’t like it for myself, the spool is usually hose specific but as stated above it is most likely the standard short tube with no flange in the middle.

why do you want to put it on a HP hose? Just screw it into the first stage.

Hi tbone,

I used the 6" hose because @Diving Dubai recommended it.

His reasons were sound and he acknowledged that that method did increase the number of failure points. My sender is on the opposite side of my body from my Perdix. I have not had line-of-sight rf drops with the 6 inch hose (Shearwater recommends installing the transmitter on the same side of your body that you mount your Perdix [ie, left--left, or right--right]). I did not follow their advice.

This one.

My LDS recommended the long spool (Oceanic) without the flange. It works well. The Shearwater sender is an Oceanic product, after all.

There's no o-ring sealing face if you don't.

Yeah, without the spool it leaks like nobodies business.

And when was the last time you had a HP leak??

I have had two. An HP hose failed and the other instance was when the spool O-rings got mushy. I replaced the O-rings in about 5 minutes. The mushy O-rings leaked ever so slightly--almost imperceptibly.

The HP hose failure put off several hundred tiny bubbles at the same time. An instructor told me that the outer layer on an HP hose has small pours that relieve pressure while not allowing a total and uncontrollable loss of gas. The loss of gas was almost imperceptible on my AI Pro-Plus 3 pressure indicator.

Having just returned from Little Cayman where the dive-op prides themselves with their "Concierge Dive Service" which turned out to be "scuba kit abuse service", I was glad that my sender was attached with a flexible hose.

Needless to say, I asked, and then demanded that the dive-op leave my sh*t alone. I like rigging my own gear. My wife did not and her reg came home full of salt water. Both of her second stages are malfunctioning. The Scuba Pro reg set was recently overhauled and now needs to be reworked again.

cheers,
m

Like me, however my choice is with a short hose with a QD on each

I could give lots of convoluted justifications as to why I think its better for me.

But if I'm being honest really really honest, I can't be arsed to have to mess with port blanks when swapping TX.

Laziness/convenience is prime driver for me. However I will be the first to admit it's the least economical solution

Don’t think I haven’t considered this too!
