Ok some brief encouragement for those that already hooked up their inflators, buddies

training is training, it gets you in the water to do amazing things but not really efficiently

so you've adjusted all your stuff, and you're ready to go, with a reg in, and your mask on
with an inflated bc you jump in to go down, and then go down 3 metres only to come up
with all your stuff mussed to make more adjustments to wait to take off your stuff to talk
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz then later zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
then it starts all over, with some mask wiggling, and the reg, and some snorkel swapping

Take a look at Bob The Diver, what's Bob doing, I don't think Bob the diver, really knows?

that inefficient hose lifting, no it's not you guys, and when you get down to where bob is
you may get around to pointing your body in the direction you're heading, still adjusting

How much time is that, just to reach your diving depth, I don't know I've never done it
Pity you can't use it as a credit for your safety stop, or tack it on to the end of your life

So it's got nothing to do with what I do but everything to do with what everyone else does
and what you, and the other diaper retailers will have them doing forever, no matter what

You the diver your mind is your own, I put it out there, as you grow all decisions are yours.

Is this Bobs friend

but if your young person looks up in the the sky and decides to become an astronaut
perhaps you could take them to the library or buy an astronauting model and a book

Before they turn Fifty!

Shoulder dumps for new people, they're more efficient, they're safer

“No, it's not you Bob!”

Panic, it's the last thing a diver does, the very last.

Mistake 3. Forgetting that you can manually inflate a BCD.
Mistake # 4 too much lead mistake #5 failed to do a pre dive check, mistake #6 fail to drop weight when had trouble to stay on surface, mistake # 7 spit out regulator when in trouble on surface mistake # 8 did not switch to snorkel. All this and people wonder why I refuse to dive with them.

That’s the problem inherent in having equipment and expecting it to balance their lack of fundamental skills
1.) proper weighting

Y'all realize this thread is from October and OP has gotten a lot of this same criticism already? If there's no new info or nothing new to be added, let this thread rest or make a new one about buddy checks and common mistakes or something.

I’m actually glad this popped up. My 10 year old will finish his last open water dive this weekend and this gave me some great discussion points with him.

He has done some one on one diving with his instructor due to other students dropping out while in the water. I asked, “Has your instructor ever showed you how to dump his weights or how his gear works.” Answer, “No, why do I need to know that.”

Classes are not taught the way they were years and years ago. After reading this thread it reinforces what I was planning on doing on our first dives together.

Uhh I would have some very strong words with that instructor before he dives with him again. Those are both really critical details to know and every instructor I've met has gone over the gear before anything else (I've only been certified...a bit under two years)

I'm glad this thread popping up was useful to you then, but most times when old threads are dug up it's by people who just keep bashing the same dead horse, and it keeps sending alerts to the OP and everyone who had been involved with the thread.

Do you mean email alerts or just on the board alerts? I ask, because email alerts can be individually turned off.

Board alerts. I turned off my email alerts, I get enough spam as is

This is something I will definitely bring up with his instructor.
However, I think you are wrong in thinking the op is bothered by this thread being brought back up. There are new divers joining this board everyday and there is useful information in this thread for those that want to read. I’m sure the OP would know there would be some bashing but would be stoked to know it helped someone else. Why does that need to stop after two months?

My wife who has been my dive partner for 20 years said she never thought to ask some of the questions I was asking him. She said, “ I know your gear but it’s not something I would of asked others if I wasn’t diving with you. Granted, I have always been her partner in the water so she hasn’t given it much thought.
