Dear Ministry of Giraffes,

You are correct, in part. Just like in the case of application for any employment position, it is a combination of experience, qualifications and character which prospective employers will make a decision on. We do not guarantee jobs to anyone, but we do indeed prepare our crew graduates to confidently stand out among applicants for their first crew role.

For those who don't already hold the necessary qualifications, we can provide them with the most highly regarded certifications available, recognised in 174 International Maritime Organisation (IMO) states. Our courses are extremely competitively priced and conducted by experienced maritime professionals in a state-of-the-art maritime training facility located in Phuket, Thailand.
In addition, we provide practical on board experience, industry orientation and career guidance. In the case of dive masters and dive instructors who have take courses at Galileo, their transfer into the Superyacht industry for the most part has proven highly successful as their onboard experience combined with guest service skills makes them a valuable addition to almost any crew.

If anyone has any questions about the exciting and lucrative career options on board Superyacht, don't hesitate to get in touch our careers advisors on info@galileomaritimeacademy.com

Kind regards,
Galileo Maritime Academy

Before I ditch my hubby and kids to run away to sea, are YOU actually hiring anybody or are you selling training for people to get hired by some other, as yet unnamed, businesses?

It’s an academy so they’re focused on training and then assisting their graduates with job hunting. Cian is asserting the academy has a broad industry network. If I were to consider training with the academy, I would expect them to have a defined list of employers and to either host or participate in periodic hiring conferences.

Yeah, I smell a scam

To the discerning reader, I don’t think it’s a scam.

I will agree the post is worded in such a way it takes some parsing to understand what Cian is offering. I could see where a younger person (or someone who doesn’t have to tear apart paragraphs everyday in their work) would think they’ve found the lucky rainbow.

I do think the “superyacht’ descriptor is a bit over the top.

Dear Bubblesong and RockiesFan,

Although I understand your skepticism, I assure you the opportunities available for scuba divers to to work on board Superyachts, with the right qualifications, are completely genuine..

There are now over 25 Superyachts located in the marinas of Phuket along with many other smaller yachts, several of which are in fact currently looking for trained crew as the high season approaches. As the only maritime training academy in the region, we regularly have the arriving yachts reach out to us for trained crew during this time of the year, hence the postings on Scubaboard for divers wishing to transfer into this industry.

Qualified dive masters and instructors stand a particularly good chance of landing a lucrative job on superyachts as they are in demand on nearly all larger charter yachts. We refer graduates to about 200 client yachts and we succeed in placing between 70 and 80% in good jobs. It is not for us to decide on employment but the yacht captain and owner who will base their decision on character, training, qualification, work ethic, team spirit and many other qualities that are necessary to be successful crew on a superyacht.

To answer your question, at Galileo we provide training for those who wish to work on board superyachts, cruise liners, merchants ships or off shore oil & gas operations, but as mentioned above we inherently also connect qualified crew to vacant roles through our network of maritime connections when applicable.

If you are happily employed, married and raising children, this may not be the right opportunity for you. But for those without ties, interested in traveling while saving as they do so, this is in fact a great industry to do so.

Kind regards,

Galileo Management
