This is a great opportunity for young divers (18-24) to learn all aspects of the diving business.
We have eight dive boats, many compressors, a retail store, a training center with a pool. We run an IDC every month and you attend the IDC as part of the internship after you become certified as a divemaster. Housing and scuba classes are free. (You buy the books).

Applicants should be Open Water or AOW certified.

Rainbow Reef is a great dive op and I believe it's the biggest in the state if not the US.

Why is it restricted by age?

There is no age restriction. I added the 18-24 age as a suggestion as most of our interns are in that age range and the "fit" seems better to me.

Many interns who have finished our program have gone on to become Course Directors, 100 ton captains, Master Instructors, Tec Instructors after arriving as open water divers and never been on a boat.

Several interns have elected to stay at Rainbow Reef for years, many others have taken jobs as instructors/captains/course directors all over the globe.

It is simply like any other of hundreds of internships in many industries that give young folks exposure to and hands on training in their respective industries. The interns leave (or stay) as PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainers and graduates are marketable, and sought after across a very wide range of dive operators worldwide.

Anyone who perceives the internship as a bad thing should not apply, nor should you suggest it to any of your younger friends or family.

All of the interns I've known in the Keys and that includes Rainbow Reef, Coral Restoration and REEF have been pretty happy with their opportunity. Many have gone on to do even more in the industry. No, it's not for everyone, but it's a great way to get your flipper in the door. :D

Proud to say that I'm a graduate of their training program, and Jim Wyatt was a demanding instructor to learn under. No shortcuts there, and while they didn't make the IDC any less anxiety-provoking, what they told us was true: "after training with us, you'll pass the IDC, no sweat." Not all my classmates worked hard enough to make that come true first time around, but the instruction was superb.
The interns that helped the class were universally enthusiastic. No grousing after hours about their working conditions at all. They were loving it!

Hey everyone. I didn't mean to open a can of worms. My question was sincere. I am older than the age range, but the original post sounds attractive to me. I was just wondering if there was an age restriction. I did not intend to open up a discussion such as that which has happened after my post. Let's be civil. I just had an honest question. I would be awesome in the role being offered, but I am much older than the range provided.

1. Never used Rainbow Reef, I know them only by reputation which is excellent.
2. They appear to lay out expectations and rewards for candidates, a sort of full disclosure. Both parties should have an idea of what they are obliged to do.
3. Lots of internships are unpaid and do not provide the vocational training that this program appears to provide.
4. I had a great paid internship in Monterey in the mid-70s (it was called cooperative education in those days) most of my earnings went to rent, etc. Appears to be similar to Key Largo as far as cost of living.
5. The age thing concerned me a little, that appears to have been resolved. (You can train anyone of any age to be a scuba professional, but beyond a certain age most will not be convinced it is fun while they are doing it).
6. I recently advised a youngster about a similar program down in the Bay Islands. He went for six months and seemed to enjoy it. This appears to be a reasonable path to career education in the dive industry.

You did not open a can or worms, it wasn't about your post.

I'm sure if you are willing to work your butt off, you will receive a top notch education from Rainbow Reef, and you will have a chance to call Kell Kelly, and tell him that's a girl's name.
