Thanks, kelemvor,
That's useful info. We are located in Collier County about 15 minutes east of Naples.
I've heard of the Venice site which could be a day trip. South of that is experiencing red tide issues at the moment
which is not uncommon for this time of year. I'll have to check out any free dive sites that I can to get dive time in between
the overnight trips.

Some folks think that I am crazy when I suggest liveaboard diving as an economical option, but if you get a good price on the LOB trip and then figure out the cost per dive it will often be much cheaper than land-based diving. A LOB includes food, lodgings and diving and you get to do lots of diving - usually 20 to 25 in a week in good weather.

But IMO, the OP should start out with boat diving before venturing into shore diving or LOB diving. Shore diving is a great and inexpensive option, but you will usually be diving alone as a buddy pair. I think that you should do some boat dives with a divemaster first, and then start looking for better and cheaper options.

I live in Orlando and try to dive in Jupiter every weekend:

$20 Nitrox fills
$30 Gas
$80 Charter
$20 Tip

$150 per trip. Although I would like to go every weekend the weather doesn't always cooperate. Sometimes I wills stay the night in Jupiter and repeat on Sunday. Those begin to add up though $$. If I had a girl who dove I would recommend a fill card to save on fills and buying trips in bulk. You are about an hour and a half from Dixie Divers. As an an example they do:
-Dive Package (10 boat dives ) $ 275.00 -12 Air fills 80s $ 58.00 Scuba Diving Gear, Classes and Dive , snorkel Charters. - Dixie Divers Services

I prefer Jupiter but they don't have the same deals. The boats I dive on do 5 trips for $300-375. :(

Do, please do tell a bit more.
Or if it's told already, a link maybe?
I'm a sucker for shallow warm colorful diving with juvenile fish and pretty sunrays. They might not excite everyone.

All sort's of critters are sheltered in the mangroves and bigger things come in for a snack. It's more like deep snorkeling but it's a wonderful way to spend 3hrs in the shade on an al80 (or lp72 and some neoprene), weightless diving. Ideal for perfecting basic skills too.

It's been 3 years since I last spent a few days on those sites.

A friend with a boat is handy, or a wife with money. Shore diving is a cheap fix. You may want to join a club so you meet more experienced divers that know a lot of tricks to keep cost down (or at least meet the guy/girl with a boat or money). Hooking up with a more experienced buddy will introduce you to the local dive scene and shorten your learning curve.

I...I don't understand how one can dive regularly and affordably.....

That's easy, Be an Instructor. Dive every weekend. You'll make zillions!

Thanks
I'll make sure to look into that some day when somewhere south with mangroves and time at hand... Does one have to worry about gators (or croqs in the wrong locale... do not want to dive there...)

I'm a sucker for Great Lakes shipwrecks. They might not excite everyone.

OP, I dive locally as 1. it's what I want to dive. 2. Cheaper. I drive everywhere. No planes! Can take all my own gear. But bottom temps on my dives this weekend in northern Lake Huron will be 40F at 100ft. And I'm diving wet. I'm known as the crazy cold water chick. :D
