I know there's so many threads about this but most are about ppl thinking to buy one. My friend had one in his closet that he never uses and said here you go. It's essentially new old stock luxfer al40. He bought it new ten years ago and hasn't dove it once. Needs a hydro has a pro valve. I'd like to start diving great lakes wrecks. And want a redundant supply for emergency only. I was originally thinking of buying a 30. But free is free. should I just use it or would I be better off posting it local and see if there's anyone out there who wants to trade a good 30 for a 40 ?

A Luxfer 40 makes a great pony. It is basically neutral and if you side sling it you will hardly notice that it is there.
Use the 40 and don't look back. The only difference, aside from capacity, is that the 30 is about 5 inches shorter, 2-3 lbs lighter on land, and will be a bit more negative. IMHO, none of those differences are significant enough to worry about and 40 is a bit more useful if you decide later to use it for deco gasses.

I'd much, much prefer to carry an AL40 to an AL30. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but the buoyancy characteristics of the AL40 are such that it's much easier to carry, don, and doff. Plus, the AL40 is the de facto standard for oxygen in technical diving....so that makes it a better tank than an AL30 due to demand on the used market and flexibility in the future, should you go that way.

Use the 40 and don’t look back. Just like everyone has stated. In addition.... if you ever do decide to go the tech route. You already have been slinging a 40 and it will be very familiar.

@sh0ck1999 al40's are better than 30's in pretty much every facet. hold more gas, easier to carry, scalable to deco bottles for tech dives etc etc. They're 3" longer which is negligible, and half an inch larger OD which you'll never notice. 5lbs heavier full which you may notice on land, but it's not that big of a deal. My al30 was stolen last Nov. it was replaced with a 40....

I have a thrity around for small peeps, but I only use AL40s or AL80s.
To me the only reason to go smaller is to go lighter if the empty pony needs to go into the single piece of checked luggage - weight wise - and fly somewhere. Then I take an Al19. Otherwise it's a 40, always. Many say to not bother with the 19, just rent a 40 or if you cannot find it sling an 80. I may go there too if I plan on going deep or am in weight trouble with the luggage...
