Apalling story. The health care system in the USA never ceases to amaze me.

Sounds like a case of someone who didn't bother looking into the fine print on his insurance until it was too late. If you're an American you HAVE to know that the business model of insurance companies is "NO MATTER WHAT, DON'T PAY"..... and that you need to read the fine print.

It's sad that he's be financially ruined by this but I have an increasingly hard time feeling sorry for people who don't sort out their medical insurance and then go online trying to raise money when someone happens so other people can pay for their bad decisions.

I disagree Diver0001. Our medical system is more than broken. When the options are all bad for 'affordable' coverage, you either go broke paying the premiums or end up like this guy. It's not bad decision making on his part. In most cases the 'quality' insurance is unavailable and/or not affordable.

The cost for the treatment and the red tape is the problem....

Well... it's hard for me to really understand it. I live in a country in which this couldn't happen. I really do have the impression that Americans often make poor choices with respect to medical insurance and would defend those choices because they have the "right" to do so on the assumption that they would never get seriously ill.

You may think it's lame but I hope you can understand that people who live in countries where medical insurance is well organized have trouble understanding why you may choose to be under insured even if you have a good paying job.....

If you don't understand it, perhaps you should not criticize. We (Americans) can read the fine print, but cannot revise it. It's take it or leave it. The deductibles are huge and then they pay maybe 80% up to a certain amount. The cost is the issue. American health care costs are completely out of control. I had an American dentist quote me $10k for some work. I went to Mexico and spent $1,200. I can add up the time they (Mexican dentists) spent, and estimate material / medication costs for the work they did. They are doing well and making a nice and fair profit. There is a town just south of the border from AZ. There are at least 20 dental office and as many optometrists. Hundreds of gringos per hour cross over. They arrive by the bus and bring cash.

Diver0001, you are 100% correct. The problem isn't the health care system in the US, it's people not taking responsibility for their actions and decisions, then expecting others, the government, etc. to bail them out. It's no different than people buying houses they can't afford, running up credit card debt they can't pay, or taking out student loans and not paying them back.
