It was at 61% charge a couple of days ago. I was going to fully charge it just before I leave for Indonesia in days. HELP! ATOMIC IS CLOSED ON THE WEEKEND.

Is this a Cobalt 1 or 2? It makes a big difference as to what to do. If a Cobalt 2, first try a manual reset, by holding the Back and Select buttons down for 11 seconds. Or try plugging in the USB cable to a computer and see if it comes up as BOOTLOADER. If it does, try updating the firmware according to normal instructions.
If it is a Cobalt 1, the only way to force a reset is to unplug and re-plug the battery. I'm sending you a PM with links to instruction sheets for this.
Was it possibly left with the adapter plugged in? If so, that can run down the battery.

Check for my PM

It's a cobalt 2 and yes the adaptor was plugged in. I borrowed another computer and am sending this one in. Thanks.

If the adapter was left plugged in to the Cobalt (but not charging) it's most likely the battery is drained. Leaving the adapter in is the same as being submerged in water, the Cobalt goes into a standby/ ready to dive mode that uses more power than normal sleep mode. It could drain the battery from a 60% charge in a couple of days.

The solution is to charge the Cobalt to bring the battery back up- it will be charging even if you don't see anything on the screen, then do a reboot/ turn on by holding down the Back and Select buttons for 11 seconds. From what you say I'd guess there is nothing wrong with your Cobalt other than not having any charge in the battery.

What side of the cable is the charging side? Stupid design! I plugged it in both sides for awhile, used the a.c. adaptor instead of sub, but when it's dead it doesn't tell you if it's charging or not . Couldnt find that info anywhere

It will charge on both sides. One side is for A/C only, which can charge at a higher rate of 1A. The USB side is limited to 500 mA. This is because at the time of the design (10+ years ago) USB charging was typically limited to 500 mA in order to protect the charging source, usually a PC port.

Plug into the Cobalt the side corresponding to the charging source you are using. This is in the manual, page 8, as noted above, along with the warning to not leave the charging adapter plugged in when not charging so as not to drain the battery.

It will charge the battery even if the Cobalt is not running, otherwise you could not recover from a dead battery. After a short time charging it should be possible to restart the Cobalt by pressing Back + Select for at least 11 seconds. If the battery has gone completely dead it will be necessary to restart the Cobalt by pressing those buttons.
