I'll be going with a group of friends to shore dive the Monterey area next week (Mar 5-9) for our university's spring break (M-F; hoping for good conditions). While I've done about 100 dives in the area, and used to know it pretty well, it's been years since I've been there. I believe my last dive trip there was in 2010. Are there any major changes I should know about, either in dive sites, shops (it looks like 'Breakwater Scuba' is new, where MBDC used to be), parking, or anything else you can think of that it might help to know in advance? Thanks!

I was there last weekend.

Glenn's Aquarius II isn't open anymore. Many of us went to Breakwater Scuba on Cannery Row (next to Backscatter), to get our tanks filled. If you park near the wall, that also means you'll have quite a trek to take your tanks after getting them filled.

That was the big difference that I noticed since being there last Memorial Day weekend.

monastery is covered by the mpa now, so if you want to spear you have to go to butterfly house, stillwater, or carmel state.

What happened to it? Did they remove it or turn it off? I haven't been there in a while.
They removed the hose and bibb about an year ago.

Half of the charter boats have left since 2010.

They have really clamped down on all the illegal camping that used to go on at the Breakwater in past years, with people sleeping in their cars, motorhomes obviously all set up to stay for days, etc. they used to not bug us, but I guess it got out of hand like so many things eventually do.

A new shop has opened up at breakwater. It's called Out to Sea and they opened in July of last year.
They offer charters, fishing supplies and some dive gear including fills - only air though.
If you're parked around the area, they have a pick up and delivery service for your tanks. Just ring them up and they will come by with a cart so you don't have to carry, lift, or drive them over yourself.

Edit. Just noticed this was posted in Feb 2018. Oh well. A bit late but maybe not so late for newer visitors.
