I'll head off the replies with my ignorant opinion formed from talking to people who spent their lives around them suggest there's not much to deter beyond the common sense don't act like food or a threat.

Attacks are a rare occurrence and poorly understood. The triggers are too complex, too many species and too many personalities.

A well used knife might be useful according to lore... I'll leave that for now.

Regards,
Cameron

I watched a documentary yesterday about great white sharks and their behaviour. It was very interesting.

The freediver presenter, discovered that you attract sharks nearby to come closer if you curl up into a ball, and you can deter them/ state your position if you spread your arms and legs out to make your appearance bigger.

They strangely understand certain body positions, as they communicate only through body language themselves.

Obviously, you should not dive in the water with the sharks if there is any immediate food source nearby, as they are in their killing frenzy.

I pull my snorkel out of my mouth and yell at them under water. (free dive spearfishing) It works pretty well.

Maybe if you hold your wrist band in front of you, like Wonder Woman deflecting bullets, you will only lose a hand.

Partially kidding. There was a study about electrical pulses repelling sharks, but I highly doubt even molybdenum magnets of this size would deter anything but a one foot shark. I think it's snake oil.

Since you asked what's out there, check out the Shark Shield. Haven't used or seen one in use. I've seen them mentioned on the forum. It's more expensive so perhaps it's less gimmicky? Do some web searching & judge for yourself, I guess!

Richard.

Size matters. I've found that if I want an oceanic white tip to come close, I need to present as small a profile as possible by keeping head on. If I turn my 6'4" body (plus fins sideways), therefore appearing bigger, I scare them off.Of course, this will not work for a shark that is bigger than you are!

Any time you are in the water with them there is a food source.
