So, after diving with this op for a couple of months, I've decided to put up a review here:

Freestyle Divers: Diving training, trips and equipment in the UAE

Location:

They have new facilities at the Royal Beach Hotel in Dibba (the old Nomad site). There is a pretty good value restaurant, a Starbucks and all the usual hotel facilities you would expect. Parking is fair, can be a bit limited but you don't have to park miles away like most of the other hotel dive ops.

Dive facilities:

They have 3 boats of varying sizes, so I have never been crowded on the boat at all. They have 9x DPV for rent as well as Drysuits in some of the common sizes. All the usual gear is available, with the addition of any and all tech gear you might need. Sidemount tanks, bailout bottles, stages, any O2 blend you may need are all available on-site, on-demand. BP/W, DIR gear sets etc are all available for rent. They also have just got their constant blending system finalized so they now have 32% on tap as needed, without you having to have O2 clean tanks. They are EXTREMELY paranoid about their air quality, way more so than any operator I have seen here.

They also have a reasonable range of equipment for sale, the selection is improving constantly.

Dive sites:

All the usual East coast suspects, the biggest bonus for me is that they are right across from Dibba marine reserve, so Dibba Rock (my favorite site) is a 3 minute boat ride away. Very handy for those who like the diving but aren't good with boats. They will also do dive sites as requested, it makes it super nice to, for example, do two deep dives sequentially (like for an AOW course) without needing to do an extra day or pay extra for the day. Midweek diving is great as well, since they will often be able to tailor times and sites exactly as you need.

Training:

They are very friendly to independent instructors, but also implement their own QA system in order to ensure that any training done through their operation is to a high standard. They can offer up to PADI IDC in-house, as well as RAID courses through to tech diving (normoxic for now), as well as UTD courses through to IDC.

General:

For me a large part of diving is the sense of community. For my money, nobody does community better than Freestyle. It is a family owned and run business, and unlike most other ops, it will often be Darryl or his wife Marine driving the boat, playing DM, filling tanks etc etc. It is also quite common for divers to end up back at the company house in Dibba town after a night dive etc for an impromptu barbecue and a couple of beverages, many is the time they have played taxi driver to take someone home who enjoyed the apres-dive beverages freely.

They take safety of their diving family very seriously, this is not a water taxi service. Often I will see one of them drop in and quietly hang around a pair of newer divers, just keeping an eye on them and making sure everyone has a great time and comes back safely.

Since they got their new facilities, I have been diving exclusively with them since they tick all the boxes i need.

@JohnnyC and @Searcaigh have dived with them, I would welcome their comments as well.

Disclaimer:
As an independent instructor, I get a discount on my diving with them when I bring students, the same deal I have with most of the other dive ops around here. I have no financial incentive for increasing their regular divers.

Thanks a lot for the kind words Brendon, glad to read we are up to your expectations.

Stay tuned for some more updates on our upcoming projects, things are getting exciting!

See you for more bubbles (or for silent dives), very soon!

Laurent

I'll gladly echo everything rainpilot said. Always wonderful dives and a wonderful atmosphere. I took a group of coworkers there and they all had a blast!

I haven't dived with Freestyle although I have been out on Darryl's boat prior to Darryl and Marine taking over Freestyle.

In fact I bought my new drysuit (Rofus) through them and the service was impeccable right down to Marine taking my measurements

Personally I dive with whoever is taking me to where I want to dive, so I don't really have a 100% allegiance to any dive op, however I am keen to check out Freestyle at some point as there are a few dive sites around their location that are worth diving such as Cauliflower Gardens and the Reserve.

Knowing Darryl though, I don't doubt the ability of Freestyle to provide an excellent service.

hello,

last week i did 2 days of diving with this operator during a short visit in uae.
I choose them because all the operators guarantee - due to less action under the week - only close by diving spots. dibba rock which is only a jump from the base sounded most interesting for me.

organisation was very easy, just a e mail and a copy of my passport - nothing else to do in front of my visit.

first day - 3 dives: dibba rock, artificial reef, dibba rock
second day - 3 dives: inch cape 2, hole in the wall, tree rock
luckily they decided to do a 3 tank for the second day to places which are more far away. i was the only costumer during this day and was very surprised. so i was alone on tour with 4 guides (including base leader) ....

all in all everything was good and very very easy with this operator, there is nothing to complain.

as far as i understand they start now also to do boat trips from dibba to musandam and are planing something in the north of musandam in the future. i will keep an eye on them for my next planned trip in spring 2018 where i definitely want to go to musandam.

temperatures: 31 degrees until 20m, then dropping down to 27 degrees (22m) with some colder currents.
visibility: between 2m and 15m. always changing.
critters: much much fish and always something small to discover. missed the whale shark at dibba rock for one day :(

greeting from germany.

I decided not to go dive, then got the message about the whale shark. I feel your pain!

@RainPilot, thanks for posting this thread & spending a day to be my dive buddy diving with Freestyle Divers. I had a blast.

A couple days ago, I went straight from Dubai airport to Dibba with rental car. This was my first time in UAE, so there was a bit of a mixup & delay picking up the rental car, ended up making the first splash at noon in Inch Cape2. Visibility wasn’t great, about 3-4m, but the dive site is great, a lot of fish.

Freestyle was able to make an adjustment to our 3 dive plan for the day by doing the 2nd dive in Martini Rock & night dive in Dibba Rock with Brendon & Kathy. I can see why Brendon likes Dibba Rock.

I still have 2 more days of diving here, so there are still a lot more to see & looking forward to do more. :D

I’ve been diving in several dive resorts in Caribbean, Mexico, GBR, Galápagos, Tanzania and Indonesia. I would rate Freestyle Divers amongst the top dive operation. Let’s put it this way, it is worth to come back again. I may bring some of my dive buddies from Texas with me next time.

Like @m_BK mentioned, I’d also like to go to Musandam with them next time.

Sorry to have missed you Dan, unfortunately I had to work this weekend :(

Hey @Dan_T

Glad you had a good time. You wouldn't' have like the Musandam. We had 3 Whale sharks (cos' we're greedy) and I have the privilege of scootering for 30 mins with a squadron of 40-40 moblas (devil rays) Plus the usual or Giant Trevalli, Huge Black fin barracuda etc etc.

Have a sporty down current, with teh scooter vertical on max, me fining and inflating I was still going down. Stopped at 35m and wiggled my way out of it.

Temps were 27 at surface, 24-21 below the layer (16-20m) but it warmed up at 45 - 50m when we briefly snooted around.

Next time you come, give me advance notice. I'm up the musandam every month and know it very well. We're always the only boat that far north.
