@npole

I also do not understand your problem with the Shearwater computer. When you have a short deco obligation , why not just ascend to 4-5 m, satisfy the deco obligation, and then just stay there for the extra time, your safety stop? That's what I do, though I don't have a countdown timer for the extra time after deco.

I think if you are just worried about the fact it is indicating 3m then maybe you need a different computer. Or just get rid of it completely and use a BT and run it in your head :)

Got the point, except that I'm not "worried", I would love to configure my computer the way I like and the way it suits me better.. I would like to have it display correctly the deco depth (that is marginal anyway...), but I also want to have the water temperature in the left bottom corner, and I want the diving time in the center, and I want a yellow smile in the right bottom corner because it makes me happy.. :) ..you got the point? It's 2017 (almost 2018), I don't understand why a piece of technology that I paid more than 1000€ won't let me set my last deco at 6m (whenever it's visually only) or won't let me whatever I want in the left corner because it decided that the space must be occupied by the word "Air" (I know I'm on Air.. it's the only gas i programmed! It cannot be anything else.. unless i program it differently BEFORE the dive) or I can't change the PO2 in the middle of the screen (TEC mode) with anything else... and so on.

Nor that I'm asking it to make me coffee.. but to let me configure whatever I need, nor to arbitrary restrict some options because whoever developed the software decided that in REC mode the last stop shouldn't be selectable betweeen the available options, but fixed at 3m.

@KWS:
Arbitrary limitations in a computer with this price shouldn't exist IMO, and asking me to switch to TEC, when the REC screen suit me better, only to have the possibility to change the deco stop from 3m to 6m sounds "off".

They are not arbitrary limitations. When in REC mode many of the options in TEC mode become fixed. That is because the REC mode is a simplified version of TEC mode. To simplify things some options become fixed.

Having lived and dived in the Mediterranean, I understand your perspective we often did recreational dives that involved a bit of deco. It was all planned. We never called it a tec dive. Of course that was also 20 years ago when computers were not yet main stream. 35 years ago my open water class work involved deco knowledge - even our tables had deco times.

However, things have changed as throughout much of the world REC dives are now by their very nature no stop dives. Thus computers in REC mode have no need for stop options. Any dive requiring a stop is now a TEC dive. And at which point one should have options. So basically you are caught in the middle.

My suggestion, embrace the dark side. They have koolaid and cookies.

Thank you for your input... so by today I'm a TEC diver! I'm gonna pour some champagne around to celebrate. :)
But then I would face even more downsides.. in TEC mode I can't have the water temperature on the main screen in a one thousand euro computer. Got my point? :p

Get a dry suit and you will not care about the water temps :). That is what I did, my friends thought I was nuts but after a dive I would sit on the bow and sing how dry I am while they danced around to warm up.

I already have a dry suit (my beloved Santi E.Motion!) ..however I like to monitor this kind of data (the water temp was just an example) to have a better idea of where I'm diving and the environment that is surrounding me, without having to switch between different pages. It's just me and my preferences, hence the desire to have a computer that could be fully customized, nor that my dive would be ruined without it! :)

Npole, it is hopeless. You are going against two fundamental laws of SB. First that all Shearwater products are perfect and impossible to improve. Second that all deco diving is 'Technical' and requires completely dressing in black.

As for infinite user-configurability, I am envisioning a dive computer I hate as much as my Android phone.

Maybe you should design and build your own dive computer so that you can get everything you want :wink:? Most folks are perfectly happy with the customization/configurability of the Shearwater screens...

Curious - why would you need to see water temperature continously?
