Why are you using the v-planner? Why not just stay with Buhlmann?

Edit: What I am actually saying is that I am confused as to why you are mixing algorithms.

If anyone is taking Tec 40 from me, any advice they got from random people on the Internet would be supplanted by the advice I gave in the class. Your instructor will go over all of this in class.

Or advice received from random people on the internet could become good fuel to ask thoughtful questions. No reason to discourage discussion, imho.

I don't know the exact limits of Tech 40, but at 130 ft for 20 minutes, without helium, there's a whole 30 seconds difference in the plan (VPM+3 vs GF30/70). At that level, it doesn't seem like a big deal to me if he's already bought vPlanner instead of MultiDeco. Of course the instructor may disagree. I am not familiar with the PADI curriculum.

It was already mentioned earlier in the thread, but Subsurface is great free dive log and planning software that can do both VPM and Buhlmann. If you don't want to buy something new, definitely check that out.

PADI does not require any specific algorithm. If you are taking the class from me, there will be an extensive discussion of the differences between the most common ones today. I will have the students do a lot of outside reading. We will discuss the issues and ome to a decision as to what we will use for our planning. Yes, any studying the student did ahead of time will be both welcome and beneficial, but the decisions will be made during the class, not by the student alone before the class even begins.

The discussion with your instructor should go over all of this and help you formulate your decision for which algorithm and what level of conservatism you will use.

Just to illustrate some differences, here are 3 plans run in MultiDeco at VPM+3, GF 30/70, and GF 50/80. Depth and bottom time unchanged, air and backgas deco, only difference is the algorithm
