Hi,

I need about 6 lbs or 3 kg of weight for my JJ with a dry suit in the ocean. I used weight pockets on the cam bands yesterday, but they are hard to work with. I know that the JJ is designed to allow for the use of tube weights for this purpose with lead or steel pipe, wrapped in some sort of protective plastic or tape. I haven't found these for sale anywhere, and I don't really have the facilities for making them myself.

Does anyone know where I can get a set of these? I'm in the US, in New York City.

Thanks!

Eh, that seems like a messy solution. You have to put sponges in the bottom to hold the shot in but let them drain, and it sounds like that would get kind of funky without removing the sponges to dry, etc... There are a lot of threads out there about people making these, just figured that someone might want to make a few bucks and make a second set for me! :)

Hi Mike

There is a company called Bright Weights in South Africa that sells "tank weights" which are long cylindrical in shape.

I carefully cut off the outer rubber protective sheath, then wrap them multiple times in black electrical tape to keep the lead covered and then slip them in to my JJ
They work really well and I haven't taken them out other than for inspection in many months

I can'f find them on a USA dive shop but maybe someone else knows where to get them. Being weights, they aren't ideal to ship - but I'm mentioning them as they are a really really nice simple solution

Bright Weights Tank Weights 1500g | Orca Industries

The weights are approx 1.5lgs each so you get 3kgs in the back

*** NO metal must touch the JJ canister else it will corrode
*** Don't add too much tape else they won't fit inside the canisters..

Hope that helps!

Thanks! Those do look slick, will look into the option of shipping. I do need to take mine out since I go back and forth between fresh water (where I don't need them) and the ocean...

OK, the attached photo is an update on this project. I think that I'm going to get some thinner heat shrink tubing and try again with these same lead rods, which are about the right weight. Probably slightly heavier than I want, but I have no facility to cut them down easily, and the rig trimmed out great in the ocean last weekend with the latest version. I also plan on putting an eyebolt in each end for easier retrieval. Maybe heat a steel eyebolt with a pointed wood screw type end on the stove to get it to glow, and then just stick it in the end of the lead rod?

Not gonna work. You come out better simply drilling an appropriate sized hole and then screwing in the eyebolt.. Lead drills easy enough..

Thanks! Will do. Maybe put some epoxy in the hole? Or do you think that it will grab easily?

It will grab easy enough, especially if you are dealing more with pure lead as opposed to an alloyed lead.
