you need to see what a ski mountain looks like when the snow melts, and before the grass/brush grows back.....

cell phones and gopro cameras abound....

I found a gopro while diving , no strap so I assume it broke. I lost a backup light when I neglected to tighten wrist strap.

This is the first I've heard of GoPros often being lost. I imagine part of it is just human error? I just found yet another mask (no broken strap) last month in a lake. And last week my brother lost a knife he's had since 1981. Stuff happens.

I lost only 1 item, so far, after 11 years of diving, logging 550+ dives (knock on wood). That is my mask, after a bad habit of doing MOF after diving. After a dive, I put away my dive gears to where they should be, except my mask was still on my forehead. Then I desperately wanted to go to #1 & jumped back to the water to relieve myself. There went the mask, bye bye to the bottom of Indian Ocean. Since then, I carry a spare mask, no more doing MOF. The mask will be wrapped around my neck when I'm not wearing it, until I have a chance to put it away by strapping it on the BCD until the next dive.

Failure points in the "selfie sticks"/monopods - either the mount itself or the telescoping portion. I've had about 30 dives with mine so far and the dive housing wrist mount is solid. No issues. You can "Look, Ma, no hands" it and don't have to worry about a thing.

I have two go pro cameras, a hero 3 silver and hero 4 black. About 800 bucks worth. It would kill me to lose one. When I dive, I wear a chesty. It is pretty snug and would be difficult to lose a camera unless the mount cracked or backed out of the housing. I hope I never lose it.

Question I have is how did you find the owner/owners of the go pro's you found?

Glenn

I've seen plenty of divers on the boat with their go pros, some on lanyards, most on selfie-type sticks and some just held in their hands, and the occasional head mount. Many of them are inexperienced divers who are struggling with buoyancy while trying to get that picture or video. Some are unfortunate enough to have it slip from their hands and go too deep to retrieve it.

If the owner would photograph a card with their name and phone number/e-mail, it would be seen when the camera is turned on. If the battery is dead, then maybe they thought to put the information inside the housing or on a metal tag attached to the housing.

Ya know those address labels folks send in junk mail? I put them on my cameras...and anything else I don't want to lose.

I've found a bunch of dive dive knives over the years, so the idea of losing cameras is not surprising. I had one of the original Heros, before they got rid of the domed lenses. The lanyard broke midway through an amazing solo dive. It was replaced with a 3+. That one flooded during its second dive season. I've switched to the chinese SJCams. If your aren't willing to lose it in the water leave it home.

Inexperience probably accounts fo most of the losses. Not realizing you need a lanyard even if camera is on mount is an easy to miss thing, until you have to replace a $400 piece of gear....
