We need to book a couple of dives for August..we are new to diving so wont be doing anything to difficult or deep. Opinions on morning vs afternoon dives?:clearmask:

Could you elaborate on why only "a couple" of dives? Are you on a cruise ship or just coming over from the mainland for a day or something like that?

Afternoon dives are less common than morning dives. Yes, the dive ops offer afternoon, twilight, and night dives, and some divers insist on doing two morning dives and one or two additional dives in the afternoon/evening. But the dive ops generally offer a 2-tank morning as the "base" or standard package, and only do afternoon dives based on demand. If your schedule allows morning dives, I don't see why you would choose afternoon dives instead.

The dive op we are going with guarantees morning or afternoon dives of two ppl when prebooked..there are two of us so that is not an issue. We will either do morning dives or afternoon dives-not both in one day. So, just wandering as far as the diving itself what if any is the difference besides the obvious times?:D

Ah, I think I understand. You're asking if, for example, the currents are stronger in the afternoon versus morning, or something along those lines? I don't think there is any difference. It's all the same underwater.

Depending on the site, I would think it would be much less crowded. That's a plus in my book. Being able to sleep in would be good too!

Safe travels,
Jay

Don't know enough of your circunstances but for me its morning. That leaves time for a late lunch, siesta and swim in the pool to cool off, then the late afternoon/evening for other activities.

Morning = deeper, afternoon = shallower

How can that be universally true? What if all the divers on the boat are doing only afternoon dives--they had not done any morning dives--and all the divers want to do the same site that the boat would normally do on morning dives? The OP implied that there may be no divers on the boat other than they, so they will be free to pick whatever site they want.

I would not think that is true if you were on a strictly afternoon schedule. Maybe for the DM if they dove that morning....

Many dive ops run afternoon dives as shallow only, and some like to do Paradise Reef way too often but I do know that Tres Pelicanos runs their afternoon dives as one deep & one shallow as in the morning. Benefits to afternoon dives (for me) are better light at depth (but I'm there in Feb which means a late sunrise) & a much more relaxed morning & breakfast. As pointed out the reefs have a lot fewer divers too.
