Hi All

My name is Jim Edwards and I'm an entrepreneur who has created a new technology for divers that I'm currently developing at a company called Digital Accelerator.

Below are the features - please take a look and feedback any thoughts/suggestions you have on them.

Proximity Awareness - The divers use small sensors (the size of a 50p coin) that they attach to their diving gear via a wrist strap. These sensors communicate to diving computers and can be configured to create a digital leash between 1 or more fellow divers. The sensors alert the diving computer if the sensors move out of a certain distance from another (or to a dangerous depth). The idea is predominately for scuba instructors who will have better proximity awareness of their students but it could also be used by recreational divers to keep close to their diving partners.

Digital Log - All dives obviously require a log of activity. These sensors will automate this process, creating a digital log of time in and out of the water and saving time and effort once dives are completed.

Digital Ping - One of the main frustrations underwater is getting the attention of your partners. These devices allow you to send a digital ping to your partners to immediately get their attention. This could either be delivered by the vibration of the sensor or through the connected diving computer.

I would really appreciate your feedback on the above and if you could answer these questions I would really appreciate it:

1 - what do you think of the features?
2 - how would you do them?
3 - are they important to you?
4 - can you think of any other features that would be useful?
5 - do you think these devices you make your diving experiences safer?
 
If it does not provide a direction indicator for the buddy, the device would be pretty much useless.

2- it's not a pitch I'm simply asking for guidance from people who are willing to spare me some of ther time and knowledge.

I'll repost this. What are you going to do that this computer can't? Aside from being rather expensive, at $1500 you get the computer, with a transmitter, but that computer has the ability to monitor 9 divers gas reserves, and if you have the location transmitter on you, they will all have a "come home" signal to actually navigate them towards you. Alternatively the boat would ideally have said transmitter, so the divers would know where the boat is. Would be ideal if it worked two ways, but I'm sure that if they did that, it would be very complicated to interface with. Better to have everyone return home to one location than to have everyone trying to select the right beacon and have it look like herding cats

Can you do all that for half the price? Now you have something, if not, you are up against an established dive company with very nice products...

So are they going to communicate using gravitational waves or quantum entanglement? There are certain issues with existing technologies and with fitting existing technologies into a 50p coin.

Thank you, that is super useful insight. The sensors will cost in the region of $20 and we are approaching the likes of PADI and to try DAN to start pushing this through as a new safety standard.

We are looking at the possibility of the 'Home' transmitter being placed on the boat as it would then serve as a dual purpose 'man overboard' fence when the boat is in transit. I know this all sounds very high level and conceptual but I'm working with one of the best minds in the country to work on this.

I hope you an all embrace this and be a part of the project. I'd love to hear any additional insight or any other features that could make this a better safety solution.
 
how are you going to get something that cheap, to have enough of a range under water with a long enough battery life for a weekends worth of diving? That is a HUGE power requirement. Better yet, why not just include it in the computer or WAI transmitter where you have more real estate to play with and less of a chance of it getting lost and giving false readings.
