Canister lights (travelling with)?

Ray, those Hog Morph/CA Explorer/all the other nominal 1000 lumen lights throw significantly more light than your 10W HID which on a good day, throw 500 lumen out the front, and they throw enough out vs the 21W that I certainly won't travel with something the size of a 21w head plus canister for 50% more light.

Yeah... but I already OWN the two can lights.

I've travelled with my can light quite a few times, and it's also a light monkey 12w. I always put it in my hand luggage, remove the head from the light and put it in a plastic bag. I take them out of my bag and put them in a bin when they go through xray. i don't usually get asked what it is...

I traveled through Egypt with a can light and the airport folks were quite concerned about what the battery was at every airport. Managers were called over, everything was swabbed and sniffed by dogs, etc.

Interestingly, they were so concerned about my can light battery that they overlooked other things in my bag. To the point that even I was surprised when I took my carry-on bag down out of the overhead compartment 5hrs into the Cairo-New York flight and realized that I had left all three cutting tools on the harness of my BP! Seems I got through post 9-11 security at three different Egyptian airports with a DIR steak knife, a Z-cutter, and a pair of trauma shears in my carry-on bag. Good thing the confiscated my toothpaste...

A few years ago I had all my rechargeable batteries (AA) confiscated in Aruba (on way to US). I cannot loose this light as I paid alot for it. That was the reason I posted earlier in the week.

I'm interested in any experiences to/from Roatan via Miami. I'm headed there next month with an UWLD LD-26 (older generation with the Standard battery...96Whr/8gm ELC) and have the UWLD travel sheet with the specs. I typically run my Petrel and backup light off rechargeable NiMH. Should I grab some disposables for those, or will I be ok with the rechargeables?

You might be able to dazzle them with the specs but technically all of the old UWLD batteries are not legal for air travel. That being said I just flew from Orlando to Cancun and didn't have any issues with my UWLD or LM can lights. I had them in my carryon and they didn't ask about anything or even swab them. NiMh batteries are legal and I doubt they can tell the difference.

what he said, technically only the gen5's are currently legal for air travel, do not take them to australia as they seem to have really nasty air travel laws wrt Li-ion batteries. NIMH are perfectly fine to travel with, but even if they were lithium, they would still be OK because of the size. The LM lights are skirting some of the new laws and are pretty questionable. They are claiming the battery packs are "isolated" even though they really aren't truly isolated and are considered the same battery pack so anything other than the two smallest batteries they're currently offering put you at extremely high risk of not being able to fly with them. The Gen5 actually uses fairly small capacity individual cells to keep the largest battery just under the legal limit with the 3x pack configuration.

"The 12W is powered by a 57.5wH battery and is UN38.3 compliant so you can travel with it in either checked or carry-on."

question is whether yours is compliant/certified, the older ones may not be.... Either way, for a 12w with that small of a battery I'd just bring a backup light with some extra batteries...

So this issue is not settled. The airline I am travelling with tell me that its to travel with it as its not a spare Li. battery. I contacted DiveTec in GCM and they were not sure either.

Fortunately my trip is not for another 2 months, so I have time.
