The second part of our Passport to Paradise involved two dives en route to Bangka. There were three of us doing this leg, my daughter Yanni and I, as well as Joe. We had also opted to keep Oce as our guide too during the stay at Bangka as he was a good guide and we had developed a good relationship with him over the previous days.

All of our suitcases were on board and we had a fairly calm cruise to our first dive site at Darunu Point. This was a muck dive and we were now on a run of several frogfish per dive for the rest of the trip until the end of Lembeh. I have never seen so many frogfish on any previous dive trip and they are not so common where I normally dive in UAE, although they do exist.

The second dive was a near disaster at Tanjung Tarabitan, wild down currents, and we were swept over a shallow reef to begin with then down very fast hitting 23M in a matter of seconds, with what seemed like whirlpools.

We all swam towards the coral and literally crawled up the wall and called it quits after 22 minutes, by then I was down to 100 bar. Yanni was not feeling to great once we surfaced and Oce was blaming himself for allowing us to dive in such a crazy current, but hey we all survived and the experience is something that is required in order to know how to deal with it. It was certainly not a dive that I would ever take a camera on again except perhaps a GoPro.

After that dive we headed towards Murex Bangka where the waves started to get higher, with a large two meter swell (six feet for the non metrified). Docking at the Murex beach was challenging for the crew with lots of shouting and throwing of ropes while reversing back to the beach.

Accommodation basic, however I preferred it to Manado but again no hot water from the hand basin and no mirror above it to shave by, it was behind the wash hand basin??

The staff were good though, but there was nobody from the resort to really welcome you and show you to the room. Fortunately the owner Danny had now moved there with his extended family and he personally guided us to where we were staying.

We also met up with Dr. Mark Erdmann whom we also met last year in Lembeh, and Yanni had some good conversations with him regarding marine matters and conservation

The resort was buzzing in fact with probably more people than the place could handle, a bit of a shock after Manado, however there was one particular family that we were glad not to have shared a boat with, basically South Africans who were still living in the apartheid era and who treated the staff in an appalling manner. The bad news is that they followed us on to Lembeh Resort, but we still managed to avoid them.

Dining area sans diners

The rather cramped camera room, which was half of the equipment room.

The southerly wind however was against us as far as diving Bangka was concerned, and we ended up doing only one dive on Bangka itself (Tanjung Usi 1) with all other dives over on the northern end of Sulawesi, the best of which was definitely Paradise Pier, including the pier itself where I did a 22 minute 5M solo dive during my surface interval on the second day there. We were also the only three divers on our boat which made it very comfortable.

Some of the non-black frogfish we found

My second ever sighting of an Emperor Shrimp riding a nudibranch, the first was in 1992

Couple of unexpected findings

Side Gilled Slug

Large Halibut

On our last night some of the staff provided the entertainment in their local language so we could not join in, but it did involve some dancing by some of us who had a Bintang too many - no photos of that part though

I am quite surprised with Bangka murex lack of welcome, probably too many guests at one time.
We've always had at least the manager on duty sometimes my guide Aswar welcoming us on the sandy beach.

I also read in your previous post you stated the food was not that good and boring, this is something on our side we thought it really improved in Bangka, compared to our last stays where food was on the edge of being mediocre. Tommy the manager (you might have met in Manado) was doing his utmost to alternate various kind of fish (sometimes smoked like in Maluku), chicken, tofu, etc he even asked the cook to bake the traditional Manado Klappertaart for dessert. For us, Bangka murex although simple buffet was one of the tastier we had in all the resorts we stayed at in Indonesia, Banda islands excluded.

On the diving side... woaww.. your experience seemed terrible...I had seen the beach with 1m high surf, it was already tough to disembark, I cant' imagine how this would be with 2m high waves crashing on the shallow docking areas.Looks like Paradise pier is a meeting point for Emperor shrimps and nudibranch, had another one there too, although a more common sight than yours (usually emperors ride Spanish dancers or big ceratosoma, not small chomodoris).

Note to SB admins, it seems entering text and posts through Google Chrome doesn't keep anymore the format, line return, space after periods. etc.
I had to copy, paste and insert again line skip in IE where text format is working.

Man that really sucks that you missed out on the really good dives around Bangka, and it even looks like the viz at paradise pier was pretty limited. Those bat fish around the pier make such great subject to photograph.

As for the rude Saffa's....so sad!! Most of us are not stuck in the past like the bunch you met. Sorry you had to witness that.

Great trip report. I'm also glad to see a few more candid photos of the resort.
One advantage of Blue Bay Divers over Murex is that they have a nice protected beach. BUT the accommodation definitely is even more "basic" than murex.

Those down currents are a bitch aren't they? Really sorry you missed the best of Bangka, I do agree the food last time I was there was very same same. I guess this means you will just have to do another trip - Sauhong pinnacles when its dive able is really a spectacular site. Meet ya there next year ;)

Thanks for the great reports Searcaigh. This has really helped me make up my mind on a trip there next year. Whilst I think I would love Bangka and its no frills I don't think the group of divers I usually travel with are ready for this. Such a shame the poor weather hindered the diving, but loving all the froggies - there must be something in the water as we also had loads more than I've ever seen before whilst I was in the Philippines. Love em!

Susie how about Gangga Resort? I'm sure that will exceed your groups expectations.

As for froggies... we just came back from a week at Tulamben and we did not see a single one!!!

I read/heard there were lots of waves in Tulamben the 10 past days, and that some of the past hotspots like Melasti, Segara or Coral Garden were crushed and now gone. Would you confirm that?

We did have great viz around Batu Mandi where I believe Murex had a resort once, the house reef there was awesome.

As for the rude Saffa's, well there are rude people in every country, I have travelled a lot to S. Africa on business for many years and have a lot of S. African friends, this family took the biscuit though, but I was not going to let that ruin my holiday.

Susie don't get me wrong about the accommodation, in my view it was better than Murex Manado, but there could be some improvements such as hot water from the wash hand basin.

The beds and pillows were super comfortable in all of the places during my trip, so no issues there, I slept solid every night from 9pm to 6 am
