Having decided on the G7x with S&S Ys-01 I am now trying to figure out which housing. I was thinking either the fantasea or recsea polycarbonate. Does anyone have an opinion as to which is best

A friend just got his Fantasea housing for the G7x, after one use, he was not cetain how he felt about it compared to a his other rig--a housed DSLR. We both looked at the Fantasea around the same time and both of us liked the dual oring and wet sensor. I might well have bought the Fantasea for my G7x had it been out at the time--I bought the Canon housing and it is working well for me. The Recsea is quite a lot higher priced, but I'm curious if it might be worth it. Please post your findings.

For me, one of the things that speaks against higher priced metal and plastic housings is that in a few years, compact cams are outdated and due for replacement. For me, it was about 4 years before I wanted to replace my S95 and Canon housing.

How do you find the actual g7x

Nice camera--here's a pic from yesterday. IMG_0030.jpg
This is from Blue Heron Bridge near West Palm Beach, FL. In general the G7x focuses faster, and does everything else faster/better than the older S95 and the S95 is a good cam. The 20 megapixel sensor makes cropping easier. I did a 2.5 hour dive and ran the battery down having not charged it the previous day after making a short dive. I will keep it charged in the future. I think it would be enough battery for 2 boat dives here. I turned it off after seeing a red indicator telling me it was near death--later I saw a pair of Frogfish so turned it back on and shot about a dozen pics using the internal flash! So, the batt has pretty good power even when nearly dead! I also was shooting both raw and jpeg using a little more power........The S95 would not do this--when it showed near death--it was DEAD!

All considered, a good buy!

What about an ikelite housing

Overly expensive and somewhat clunky in my view. I used to use Ike strobes and arms and trays--they were the best at the time and Ike had the best service, incredible service for ANY business! I did just see an Ikelite housing for the S95 Canon a few days ago and it looked nice. It does have a threaded lens barrel, so a macro or wide angle wet lens can be easily added.

for whatever it is worth, i have been struggling with this same issue. subject to last minute reconsideration, i will go with the fantasea. of the poly housings i've looked at, the canon housing (+/- $400) is out based on my experience with the g12 housing. too clunky, for one. the ikelite, recsea, and fantasea are at the same/similar price point (500-550 usd), with the fantasea coming in the lowest. it also has a decent package of accessories coming along with it (moisture sensor, for example). the housing seems clearly labeled as to functions. there are dual fiber optic attachment points in front of the flash for s dual strobe system. so rightly or wrongly, unless someone has a reason why one poly housing is a clear better choice over the fantasea, i will just stop agonizing over this and go with my research reinforced gut.

I think the Fantasea is a great choice as it has the dual orings and included leak detector. Please post a report here when you can. I think some places online may have it for $400. or thereabouts soon.
