(1) I took the Mexico free roaming plan before I went to Mexico, but my phone never worked right! It would text and accept calls, but not make calls to the US, locally, anwhere I tried with various numbers. (2) I could not log into my account - blocked. (3) I called on Skype but they don't accept Skype calls and the recording told me to log into my account - which I couldn't. (4) I went to Support on their site but it told me to log into my account - and guess what?! (5) I got to talk with Live Chat once, he said he'd fix it in 30 minutes, but that failed and I could never get Live Chat again. (6) I posted to their FB page about my problems, but they never answered.

All I am getting is a refund and BS. Now he tells me that I must have a Sim card for the Global plan to work, but that is nowhere on their site. He finally transferred me to a Global tech expert - who didn't know much. His research shows no sim card required and that my Motorola Barrage 860 should be Global ready and good to work.

He also tells me that my daughter's iphone should be Global ready and good to work on their coming cruise, but we know that what they say is worthless.

T-mobile. Works like buttah, that is it works for now, until Verizon buys them.

Dear Dandy,

I have had the Verizon Mexico plan for about 5 years. All my calls to and from Mexico cost me an extra $10-15 per month. But I do that year round. Maybe they had a glitch in setting up a short term plan? I am very happy with what I have.

Yeah yeah, the are other companies - which I don't want to use. They really suck around my home county.

I have been a Verizon customer for 15 years and I want straight, dependable answers - as well as my phone to work.

I've used Verizon down there before in other years. It should work there, and I should be able to log into my account there - so I filed a trouble ticket demanding answers.

I hate it that the friendly agents will bluff at times, giving me answers that do not hold up. One guy insisted I needed a Sim card, but since my phone is not Sim card capable - they would loan me one for a trip. BS! The Global technician confirmed that my phone is Global ready, no sim card needed.

The past 5 years I have always used my iPhones with no issue, before that a variety of other brands with no problem. I am on Verizon. I always turn off my data and use the Internet for email. I have a local phone on the island. I don't know what you are doing Don but Verizon works well for me and many others who visit.

So how do you turn off data? On the phone or thru Verizon? That's probably something we want to do to the kids' phones on their cruise, while leaving one iphone on the Global plan for ports.

The technician said it'd take a day or two to work the trouble ticket, but he called back after a few hours to tell me what little they had and to close the ticket. It should have worked, and I should have been able to log into my account down there - but the only way to explore the problems was while I was there. I did get a text on arrival in Mexico to call 001-908-559-4899 for roaming assistance, but after the other failures & frustrations - I didn't try that. Like the main Verizon number, it will not accept Skype calls, and I didn't want to risk spending money on that. Verizon swears that it's a free call from Mexico, but we have seen that we can't always believe them.

Maybe it'll work better next time.

Frustrating! I don't know if it works the same anymore, but I had to activate the international roaming on the phone before leaving coverage in the states. I think this was done by dialing *228?

*228 is used for a choice of 2 options: (1) To program a phone over the air - so much easier than the old methods. (2) To update PRL codes, for the Preferred Roaming List. Doing #1 automatically covers #2. We used to need to update PRLs manually but their system does it for you automatically, generally. My PRL was current as I do check that before leaving the US.

There was also a risk of my having the System Select on Home Only, but that's an obsolete function unless one lives close to an international border and wants to avoid international roaming. Our family trip to Big Bend NP might have been an occasion, but there are no Mexican towers near there, only around Terligua TX - which my daughter did use on one hike. I was hoping all phone functions would be unavailable there. Anyway, I did check that and it was on Auto select.

I tried to get the $15 Verizon roaming plan yesterday but could not get a live person on the phone for the life of me.

Can anyone tell me how to activate it here in the States before I head down to Coz ?

You really want to get an agent to add it and backdate it to the first of your billing cycle so you can have the full allowance of the plan, I think.

You can sign into your account and add it yourself tho, here: Global Roaming | Verizon Wireless
