Finally figured out what length inflator hose I want for my wing (diving singles right now). The standard LPI was just too long and the big bend with all the extra space was killing me. Now the question, what do people think about getting one of those fancy flexible miflex hoses vs just a standard hose. Is there a significant increase in utility/ease of use or would the standard be just fine. Diving dry about half the time so flexibility gets a little limited but not really. Thoughts? Thanks.

A standard is fine but, there are some uses that a miflex style works very well. The LPI and drysuit hoses are 2 of those. Big picture stuff not a huge initial difference, I've had my piranha braided and miflex hoses for about 7 years and they are holding up great (that's on about 6 bcd's and reg sets). If you've got the money then why not.

its a "love-hate" thing.

The only real "hate" I have is that if you are in algae/weedy waters, the fabric retains crud on it.

Many do not care for the "floaty" tendency (I haven't noticed it), and, if the hose is prone to contact, many don't like the "sandpaper effect" they have (I have had this with suits and my neck)...

Agree with posts above. I have braided hoses for all except long hose, I found it didn't play well, too floaty one wild. But for all other applications I find they work well due to added flexibility, especially for the wing if using a shorter hose and Drysuit. I don't use Miflex but the cheaper, seemingly equal quality, braided hoses as sold by DGX.

Yes Bob, totally agree, the waters I dive are not the cleanest and algae, dirt etc does become embedded in the hose. I occassionally take a toothbrush to them. Yes, the braided split and become scratchy on the back of your neck if long hose configuration and no hood.

I think the one place Miflex hoses really have a value is with hose routings that require sharp angles, like some of the doubles setups with the regulators that don't have an end LP port. Otherwise, you are paying more money for little advantage. If you are diving a single tank setup, it's unlikely you have any sharp bends the hose needs to make on its way to the inflator, so I think you're buying an expensive hose that you have to scrub with a toothbrush (!) for very little return.

The braided hoses from DGX are the same price as rubber hoses. Miflex are rather expensive.

I have a vareity of Miflex braided hoses on both my OC rig, and rebreather. Love them all the way around, and have never had a single issue over the years.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll see what the prices are like and go from there.

Fwiw it's mostly single tank diving and the only algae I plan to see is macrocystis

Oh, and I was just using miflex generically

If you use Miflex 6" HP hoses with large face SPG's in sidemount you will need Viagra :)
