However I doubt many people, bravado aside, would go diving in an area with a FATAL shark attack once a week.

picture is worth a thousand words:)

That's just it. That doesn't even happen on a worldwide basis and definitely not to Scuba Divers. It's a paranoid "what if" that could never come true.

I also wouldn't go diving in an area that had random weekly meteor showers, weekly hurricanes, or weekly pirate attacks.

...but then again, I would probably be in support of pirate culling :)

It depends on the.kind of attack as well.. On swimmers or surfers would not stop me from diving. Spearos? Nope don't do it so less risk in my mind. If you could prove that they were specificay targeting divers maybe I would stay away. But have never heard or seen any evidence that has occurred. Much more risk in bear country or when you discipline a 22lb himalayan cat like the one that is all.over the news now.

It's funny, but popular perceptions are very often wrong. If I were to ask you when was the last hurricane to really hit Key Largo, would you be surprised that it was almost 50 years ago in 1965 with Hurricane Betsy? Sure, Andrew had an impact, but even that was 22 years ago. The hype is almost always worse than reality. I don't live my life catering to my paranoia.
