I dove with Captain Andy this morning from Niuhi charters. He runs a 6 pack from Southwind Marina in Pensacola. There were only 3 of us on the boat which was nice. Captain Andy is a very knowledgeable guy about diving in general but also fish species. He was professional but also all about fun.
We did a 2 tank in shore dive on the Russian Freighter. The first dive was kind of a cluster. My instabuddy only dove a few times and although alert he was a huge AIR HOG! There was significant current on the floor and the first dive was so so. We did the second tank on the Freighter again and it was night and day different. The current laid down and I enjoyed an awesome dive. Lots of fish in this wreck. I got to see a Dolphin take out an amberjack, a playful octopus, there was a nice bull shark cruising but I was the only one that missed it! I saw its shadow but thats it.
The freighter sounds boring by online descriptions there isn't a lot left of it. BUT it was covered in life. Critters in every nook and dolphins cruising by was an added bonus. I think max depth was 87'.
I am amazed at how many Lion fish are in the gulf now. We stuck a few of them but they really have taken over.
But overall a fun dive and I will definitely be using Niuhi again. His divemaster did great work and babied us. All I had to do was eat pineapple, soak up the rays, and enjoy the greatest mother nature has to offer.
I had the Oriskany booked tomorrow with Andy but had to cancel bc of a family medical issue. I'm really bummed. One of the girls on the trip went yesterday and said viz was over 100'
