hi board!

my 2 buddies and me will arrive on the 15.04.2013 in curacao. we are Padi AOWD and RD, have our own equipment and like to check out some shore dives, but also dont wanna miss the boat trip highlights as watamula, eastpoint and mushroom. we have a car and will live in the chogogo resort, well it is not really in the west where the spots seem to be, but we have car. so our nearest dive center is the scuba do, the next would be the ocean encounters. can somebody give me a recommendation which base offers good boat trips to eastpoint, watamula and mushroom forest? is it a big deal to do watamula without boat? for the shore dives we like to book non limit dive package. the shore dive spots on our list are alice in wonderland, porto mari, all west house reef, playa lagun, cas abao... i will appreciate any further recommendations or hints. and we are also very interested in a good deco beer, hey we are from Austria, we live for beer, are there good places where divers meet divers in the sunset?

Hey Gleds,
First and foremost good beer is Polar. Hans at CURious2DIVE does great shore dives. having said that you do not want to miss a shore dive near you Directors Bay and Tug Boat. I would use Hans to direct those dives. As for Watamula I would use GoWest Diving https://www.gowestdiving.com/ but you need to drive to the west end to do such. Make it a Friday thru Sunday and enjoy a meal at Curacao Sunshine - Rental Property on the Island of Curacao Sol is located right near Playa Kalki the beach which has GoWest diving and house reef Alice in wonderland. You will have a great time!

hi irie1029,

Polar sounds good and defenitly cold, what a beer should be, thanks for that. so you think daytrips from chogogo to the west of curacao is too far and not worth for a day? gowestdiving is on my list, thanks.

Oh no you must definitely - go west young man...(a famous US phrase) also there is a great little restaurant "local" on the main road caraccasbaiwegg very near you.. almost right across from NAPA parts store called Pinchos Garden you and your friends will really like it... unless you are vegan.

ok, maybe i misunderstood, because of your recommendation "Friday thru Sunday" i thaught its better stay at the west site of curacao overnight and not go back to jan thiel. so daytrip is no problem from chogogo to westpunt? thanks again.

From Jan Thiel to Westpunt is about an hour drive. Since you'll drive north of town, once you get out of the Jan Thiel area and past the airport, traffic will be light/non-existent.

Diving Watamula is very difficult without a boat as that side of Curacao is more vertical.
Watamula ? Curacao, Nederlandse Antillen | Reisreporter.nl - this is close to the actual site. There is a way down but IDK who can give you directions.

Go West goes there on Sundays and Thursdays. They're the closest shop to the site. https://www.gowestdiving.com/boat-schedule.html

When you dive Playa Lagun, also dive Playa Jeremi. It's about 5?mins. drive north. Discover Dive has tank rentals at Lagun if you don't want to haul yours from town. Discoverdiving & Restaurant -> Home   They would be convenient for both dives as they're at the entrance to Playa Lagun.

I'd dive Porto Mari either on a weekday or get there early on the weekend, it's a popular locals beach and parking is limited.

Another site you might try is Varsenbaai/Kokomo. There's usually seahorses there, there's a Pontoon boat wreck at 80' to the south (good turn point)and the smaller carpiles are nearby. There's supposed to be a good restaurant there now also - the new owners have put some money into it - it needed it...

Closer to you, dive the Tugboat. The boat itself is good for your safety stop (it's in 20') but the wall around the south point was a good dive. Also if there's no ship moored/working there the pier itself is supposed to be decent also. Fascination at the pier near Tugboat. | Flickr - Photo Sharing! I understand the dive school there shut down so the tugboat itself is near one of the pilings off to the left of the beach. Or wait till one of the cruise snorkel boats drops 100 snorkelers there mid-morning - that's the spot...lol.

My buddy's wife used to guide on Curacao. One of her favorite dives in that area was Snake Bay.

There's a beach bar at Lions Dive that might be the closest thing you'll find to a dive bar. I've never been there but we went by it diving with Ocean Encounters - their shop is 50yds. away. Probably a higher percentage of divers there than elsewhere since most of the other resorts are hotels with diving.

Pirate Bay in Piscadera Bay is a fun little bar, beachfront, they'll often have live music. I wouldn't make a special trip but if you're in the area...PBay is a couple miles south of the main road as you're driving back from the west side. thanks a lot steve, seems u are the shark in the board. i was already wondering if we can put 6 tanks in our trunk, maybe its better to rent the tanks at the spots in the west. slowly i get a plan how and where we do the diving, we are just for two weeks on curacao, so i dont wanna worry my brain when i am already there. three more question please:
- watamula/paradise and rediho/mushroom forest is clear, what do you say about east point, scuba dive offers trips?
- there is one thing i am also looking for. i use the cellphone for navigation on the island and i would like to take it with me when i am diving. beside that i have also space for the car key and some dollars. i checked out some cases like the otterbox 2000: OtterBox 2000 Waterproof iPhone Case | OtterBox.com have u ever used something like that?
- i have Franko Map Curacao (Curacao Guide and Dive - Franko's Fabulous Maps of Favorite Places! - frankosmaps.com), but are there detailed dive plans of the spots available, cause for the briefing it would help us a lot?

greetings from the cold austria

No wonder you did'n't find it because the brewery was dismantled some years ago. The location is empty now and was named as one of the the sites for the new to build hospital. All we drink now are imports.

Probably. We did both, hauled tanks and also rented from the on-site operators at Lagun, Westpunt, Porto Mari, Varsenbaai etc. We seemed to often go near/by Discover Dive while diving in the west. Partly because we stayed a few days near Lagun.

Also there's Trunk Divers at Varsenbaai - they wrote the guide listed below. Porto Mari Sports at PM. Cas Abao Watersports at CA. And a drive-up rental/fill op on the main road west - Relaxed Guided Dives Curacao - Dive Shop

Get some guilders also, most of the shops/beach operators will collect a small usage fee - unless you rent from them.
what do you say about east point, scuba dive offers trips?
I've never dove east of the Tugboat.

I haven't - I use a Witz Case for keys/cards etc. They also sell a cellphone sized version but I've never used it. Not sure I'd trust my phone to a $12 case...

Available on Curacao at many dive shops - Welcome to the Curaçao Diving Guide

I'm a DM on Curacao with over 2,000 dives on the island, having dived probably most if not all the sites on Curacao, I can say without doubt, the best diving regarding reef condition and marine life diversity, is at "East Point" !!!

The only downside to East Point is that it can only be dived by boat, the following operators currently do trips there:

- Dive Charter Curacao (the one I worked for) "http://www.divechartercuracao.com/"
- Scuba Do (based in Jan Theil beach) "http://www.divecenterscubado.com/sofena/k/acs_center_/impressum,acs_cura,0,folder.html?language=english"
- Ocean Encounters (based in Lion Dive) "http://www.oceanencounters.com/"

Which one you choose depends on your skill level and comfort requirements. Dive Charter Curacao, who run a rib (max 8 divers), offer the best chance of getting to and even around the tip of East Point, especially in rough sea conditions, and the further east you can get the better the reefs are, but the trip can be bumpy and you need to be able to backward roll of the boat and climb back on. Scuba Do and Ocean Encounters run larger standard like dive boats, which in good weather can also reach the east end of the island, but in rough conditions you may have to dive sites not so far out.

Watamula comes in a close second to East Point being the last dive site to the west end of the island, its generally a very easy drift dive (about 1 hr.) from one end of the reef to the other. This dive is best done by boat due to the unpredictable currents, the boat can drop you at either end of the reef so you can use the prevailing current to help you along the dive. I would use GoWest Diving https://www.gowestdiving.com/, as they operate a boat from "Playa Kalki" (aka Alice in Wonderland) only five minutes boat ride from Watamula. You can then also do Alice in Wonderland once or twice as a shore dive, either before or after Watamula, follow that up with food a Sunshines "Sol Food" this makes for a great days diving.

For shore diving you have great sites both quite local, and also up to the west end of the island, the following are some of my favorites:

Local to you in Chogogo (east side of Willemstad)

- Directors Bay, this is a great wall dive in both directions, there are no onsite facilities, and don't leave valuables in your vehicle (a guide is useful)
- The Tug Boat, wall and tug boat to the left, and under the pier to the right, there are no onsite facilities, and don't leave valuables in your vehicle (a guide is useful)
- Marie Pompoen (Pierbaii, close to Breezes and The Dive Bus) a great diverse shore dive with good onsite facilities at The Dive Bus.

Close but to the west of Willemstad, over the bridge

- "Superior Producer" best ship wreck in Curacao (+/- 100ft. deep, near the cruise ship terminal, can only be done when no cruise ship is docked) I would highly recommend a dive guide of this dive!
- Blue Bay wall (Blue Bay resort) quite a long swim out to the wall but a great dive, beware of the current, you have to pay for access to the beach.
- Snake Bay (Boca Sami) the water can get a bit choppy if the wind is up, to the left is the better dive.
- Vaersen Bay (just past Boca Sami), great normal dive, but if you are deep dive certified there is an excellent "Car Pile" here, but it starts at 100ft. and some of the best stuff is at around 130ft. only do this dive with a guide!

Now further out of town towards the West

- Porto Marie (great double some would say triple reef system) great onsite facilities, but best done during the week, to avoid crowds. To get the best from this site I would recommend a guide.
- Lagoon (quite a long swim out to the reef, but if you are good on air you can go out under water along by the rocks)
- Jeremi, Klein Knip, Grote Knip, these are three small beaches which offer good diving, but be aware there are no onsite facilities, and don't leave valuables in your vehicle!
- Playa Largu, this is a fisherman's port, which offers great diving, including a good chance of seeing turtles, there are no onsite facilities, and don't leave valuables in your vehicle!
- Playa Kalki, (aka. Alice in Wonderland) great dive site with good dives to both the left and right, good on site facilities and security, they now have a guard in the car park during the week.

There are of course many other great sites on the island and I'm sure everyone has their own favorites, usually because they saw something great there, I hope this helps.

As always, most of these sites you can dive without a guide (except where I recommended otherwise), but some times having a guide that knows the reef and knows at what the best sort of depth to be at during any give part of the dive can really make a difference!!!

All the best and enjoy you vacation!!!
