One reason I always dive with redundant computers (until now since one died and is being serviced).

I was interested in the BUD and wondered why the price drop. Was $300+ last year. Did a quick search and found a place selling it for $129! wtf? If I didn't have a backup already I'd be all over this.

Thinking about this exact scenario caused me to buy a 2nd (identical) back up computer before a trip to Galapagos. Now I dive almost every dive with 2 computers. While I didn't need it in Galapagos, I have used it to "save" 2 other dives. I certainly could have used tables and figured it out, but didn't need to with a backup

1) I would go to my backup computer, as I always have one on me.
2) If I didn't have a backup computer (it failed as well) I would sit out for the rest of the day, and either rent a computer for the next day or use tables.

As I said, my vote is backup computer with you on every dive.

If I recall, the OP specifically mentioned a dive resort scenario. At dive resorts in many places in the world you are expected to dive with a DM. If I had to resort (no pun intended) to tables for the remaining dives of my week, I would feel a little silly telling my DM, who is probably wearing a computer himself, that our remaining dives for the week will be limited by my table calculations. Granted, that would be the right thing to do. But would I really bring myself to do it, or would I give in to the temptation of doing trust-me dives based on the DM's computer? I'd rather make sure I bring a backup computer and not have to find myself in that dilemma.

Now, if we're talking about a scenario not involving a true resort, or some kind of resort where you are free to dive as you please (for example, shore diving on Bonaire), then there's no problem using tables as a backup.

I also always wear a backup computer. I've never had to use it for myself but have lent it to a buddy 3 different times when their single computer went out.

I just switch to the computer between my ears. I always have a watch and a depth gauge. I track my dives even when I am on the computer. I still run tables and plan my dives so if I have to fall back on tables I never really left them.

I haven't read the responses but the most practical and least economic solution is buy a redundant computer and wear it on all of your dives. If the dive trip is only once per year what could another $250.00 item in the scheme of everything you own really mean?

Following protocol borrowing your buddies cpu isn't an option.

If the diving is very shallow (< 25' say) a second dive can be done with a bottom timer and tables since this is essentially one long safety stop. I personally wouldn't dive anything beneath that. The next day I would just switch to tables if no cpu you were available to borrow or rent.

If I were on vacation and that happened to me and I didn't have a backup, I'd forgo diving that day and go visit the kitesurfing instructor or something:D

I'll fall in with Nemrod. Use your brain.

I have an often posted slate on my wrist that gives my "terminal dives", basically all that I can do at my SAC at various depths with the gas load that I have. So push-comes-to-shove, I don't need anything more than an SPG to know where I am.

Speaking to your question:

I have a two identical 'tech' computers, an old soldier Uwatec Smart Pro (hockey puck), and a bottom timer. I'll always take two of something from that collection, exactly which two depends on what I'm planning to do.

Buy a bottom timer in addition to your DC if you are willing to think about what is happening, buy a second DC if you just want to enjoy your vacation...
