Hello, I am trying to get 1 more person in the Night Diving Certification Class for United Divers Inc. (United Divers Inc | 59 Washington Street Somerville, MA #617-666-0410 || Monday- Friday from 10.00 am to 7.00pm / Saturday from 10.00am to 6 pm)
Pretty much, They will not hold a class for 1 person (understandably) so I need one more person to join. I have contacted all the members from my original OW class and they can not. It is 30 dollars for the book and 100 dollars for the class. You will need your own light and I believe they include equipment rental in the cost or if you have your own thats great. I need 1 person with me in the class. It (The Dive Shop) is located in Somerville MA and they are really great there and SUPER FRIENDLY! The class is the 19th so you will have to go in and sign up by Tuesday the 18th. Please Please I really need the Scuba Boards help on this! Going up the chain is a dream of mine and this really is a first step for me since I got my OW certification 2 months ago. Thanks :D

(I get it if people can't it is pretty short notice and I'm not yelling at you guys to bail me out but this will mean a lot to me in the long run. So Thanks everyone for reading and reply if you can sign up thanks :D and if you can't spread the word I need this to go out to as many people as possible)

WHy do you need a night cert? Why not just take the AOW class and have night as one of the options? Or better yet find an independent instructor that will take you night diving. You don't need a class to dive at night really. Just some good instruction on use of lights, communication, and buddy skills. No need to buy a book or even get a card. No op will ever ask to see one.

I actually did a night diving class long ago as it worked for me at the time, and it wasn't a bad class, but I wouldn't jump through hoops to take it. I agree, if you want to take a class do AOW with night as one of the options - that's a class that should be easier to find running, and will give you some useful night dive basics as well as a card that's actually useful.

+1 to the ideas above

another idea would be to see if any local shops are still doing group night dives in Sept......and tag along on one of these. A DM or dive leader will be there...you'll talk about night signaling....and it will be much cheaper :)

Subsequent edit - here you go.....United Divers already has the answer for you (3 between now and the end of Oct). Canoe Beach on Nahant is a great night dive (as long as you manage the parking) = easy entry, shallow depths, protected cove as long as the wind is right.....I've had some great night dives there.

In the meantime, do as much daytime diving as possible to increase your comfort level on the night dive.

@Chris, you can only attend those if you are Night Dive Certified. @Everyone else, I am taking AOW in Spring but I am doing it through a group scholarship so we all have to pick the 4 together and Night Dive won't be one of the options, It's going to be like Deep Diving, Wreck Diving, Boat Diving, and one other one. That's why otherwise I would.

*Edit I know this because that's who I'm affiliated with and I quote from the Dive on the 15th
"This is a fun night dive! Dive lights and Night certification required! $10.00 and you get a free air fill! Meet at UD at 6:45 or Canoe Beach, Nahant at 7:30!!"

UncleDonnie,

I commend you for taking a class to familiarize yourself with night diving to give you more comfort and confidence. All divers are different and have different reactions in various situations, especially night time and limited visibility conditions. While the cert itself is not widely required, if it is in your area to participate then it certainly has value beyond giving the training and education that you will receive.

Please do not let anyone question your judgement to participate in classes that will enrich your diving skills and comfort level. The night diver class is a valuable tool for many divers. Good luck with finding another diver to take the class and enjoy diving!

What a scam to sell a night course. Not cool.

That's a bit harsh Jim. Maybe with PADI, they can throw that in with AOW through the Adventures in Diving Manual, but not SSI, as an example as you need the course.

For people who have experienced buddies, it may not make sense to take a night diving class, but for new divers without anyone to tell them what they don't know, how else would they figure it all out? Night diving isn't rocket science, but there are things that new divers may not even think of--back up lights, how to signal, etc. Especially around here, there are some sites that are great for night dives, and some entries/exits that are just plain dangerous in the dark, and tide factors to consider. The SSI course also covers low viz diving, which can be really helpful in learning/thinking about how to maintain buddy contact, signal and navigate when conditions aren't ideal, which happens pretty often in New England.

UncleDonnie, if there isn't another student that signs up for the class, I do know of shop(s) that will do classes with one student, send me a message if you'd like to know which ones.
