Are there any other charities related to ocean conservation and dive safety that I should know about beyond the really obviously listed ones here? Project AWARE and so on have their own sub-forum so they're hard to miss, and DAN is certainly well known, but surely there are others worth looking into.

Hi Naimis,
I read your pay and thought I'd share my story with you. I'm an undergraduate, and I will be going to Roatan Honduras in may. I'm going to be doing my research on the invasive lionfish. Although it is not technically a charity it's an extremely serious problem. I have a kick start page where I'm trying to raise money for my research. It would really benefit me and my findings will contribute to future much needed data compilation about the spreadi ng lionfish.
Scientific Paper: Invasive Lionfish in Roatan Honduras by Taryn McFarlane — Kickstarter

Thanks got taking a look at my research outline. Please relay this with anyone you think may be interested.

Did anyone mention anything related to Sylvia Earle already? Her Alliance and her Mission Blue are something to mention ... also check out her speech at TED in 2009. I just published more of this on my blog.

Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) has launched a massive concept called Project Baseline. At present, all dues from the electronic level of membership go to PB -- and the first $39 of all higher level memberships do, too. You can also donate money directly to the project. The concept is to try to document diver-accessible underwater sites as completely as possible, to avoid the phenomenon of shifting baselines (where nobody knows what conditions were five years ago, so nobody knows if things are changing, for the better or the worse).

Hi TSandM,

Seems a lot of projects are more or less the same thing. I like the whole approach of Sylvia Earle with her Mission Blue a bit better, because it does not only focus on divers but takes the angle of global oceanic issues like depletion and mismanagement.

Anyway, it is not about "my charity is better than yours"...

If you check my blog, feel free to add these other initiatives there... I'll try and update it there as well, so if people are thinking of aligning to any charity, they can pick one from the list. I would love you to start the discussion there as well.

Cheers,
Maurice
