I'm a Fish!
I want to repaint a old steel tank. Is their anything wrong with removing the old vis. stickers?

really? all my tanks have a handfull of vis. stickers on them.

All stickers are supposed to be removed for a visual inspection. They could possibly be hiding a defect. Of course, paint can hide a defect as well.

I have some vintage cylinders that have not been recommissioned yet. They tend to have an array of stickers. Some read like a history of local dive shops. Maybe in the day it was the cool thing to do, like luggage tags on steamer trunks.

All of my currently active cylinders sport only the current sticker. When I have the time I remove the prior sticker myself prior to VIP since I have not always been pleased with shop removal methods.

So by all means remove all stickers when refinishing. Be sure you understand what you are removing. You may be better off with an ugly touch-up job.

Use very hot water on the sticker so you can remove it in one piece. Then, cover any large rust spots with it so it will pass the next VIP. :joke:

Yes, we used to think a tank covered in different shops stickers was cool as in the above.

How are you supposed to inspect a cylinder inside and out if it's covered with a sticker?
Inspectors who don't remove the sticker are just plain lazy at doing a thorough job.

Feel free to remove the sticker, the only one you should have on the tank is the most current one.

Like the big NITROX Tank Wraps some shops require?

I have stickers on some of my 72's going back to the late 70's. I like it, gives the tank a personality. I did have to repaint one of them so yes I had to scrap all the stickers off. :(
