My wife and I have never dove in Cozumel and wan tto come down in early March. We are torn between Fiesta Americana that has mediocre reviews but seems to have a really good dive shop and the Occidental Grand. We do not mind spending a bit more for value but we really are aiming at diving more than anything this trip. There is also the Presidente - but is it as good as it makes itself out to be for the buck? Does it have a good dive shop?

Marg is right Fred! Don't limit yourself based on the hotel's dive shop. We've stayed at Fiesta Americana 5 or 6 times and always have our dive op just pick us up on from the pier each morning. And even thought we don't do boat trips with the on-site dive op, we can still rent tanks for shore dives no problem. Now as for where to stay, I can only say we've had good luck at FA - even since they've gone 100% all-inclusive. (Not big AI fans, but it is convenient!) Rooms are decent, staff is very nice, and food - in general - pretty good. It's not the Ritz, but it's not Motel 6 either - so I guess it depends on what you're looking for.

Two of our friends (PowerDude), my wife (makeusleep) and I will be in Cozumel on the 24th. Then we leave on the 31st with many photos and video i hope. Looking forward to diving with Aldora again and spending some quality time underwater.

Welcome Token! Gotcha added to the list! Have stayed at Villa Las Anclas, but it's been some years. Very nice, quiet, but close to all the restaurants and action in town. It's like having a small condo, rather than just a hotel room.

As for diving, I would probably try to make a reservation now. March is a busy month, and you'd have better luck doing a bit of research based on what you're looking for and getting a spot secured now, rather than spending your 1st day on the island calling everyone looking for an open spot. Things like - are you looking to hop a boat in town? Not too many ops pick up in town, so something to look into. (I know Blue XTSea does, and I'm sure some others here can give you some other in-town pick-up suggestions, if that's what you want.) Otherwise you can easily grab a cab to the dive op location. I always dive with my girl, Scuba with Alison, so when staying in town we just make arrangements with the same cab driver to pick us up every morning to take us to the marina where her boat is. Lots of great ops on the island, so you may have difficulty picking!:D

If it's you're first time to Coz, prepare to be addicted!! :)

I agree with Kat... you need to make reservations. Also it looks like you are a brand new diver - are you bringing your own gear? Do you need rental? You need to mention both when making reservations.
FIRST I would order that MAP, then once you get it, you can see where your villa is located, and can decide what dive shop to use according to where they will need to pick you up (which pier).

robin

Kat and Robin -- Thank you for your welcome and advice. I'll get busy making some reservations. I'm looking for 2-3 days diving on Coz...something not too deep or challenging as I am indeed a newbie. Close-by pickups don't worry me much...last year I packed my gear from one side of Key West to the other to dive, so a bit of walking is fine. Yes...I'll be bringing all my own gear so no need for a rental. I've got my map on order...can hardly wait to get there. I'm hoping _not_ to get addicted however...there are a few other places in the world I want to go diving, and my wife won't put up with going back to Mexico year after year... :D

Cozumel plaice is our home for the week.

Hi, I'll be in Coz from 3/16 to 3/21. Looking to do 3 or 4 mornings and at least 1 night dive. I've never been there, so I'm looking forward to my trip. Not sure which dive op I'll be going with. I'm staying at the Presidente... any suggestions? I was thinking about diving with Scuba Du, but I'm a little worried about short dives since I've heard they make everyone surface together.

Pretty sure there are lots of good ops that don't make you surface as a group (mine doesn't.) I'd check around and see what suits you, and who has space available.
