I can't think of any time where passing the tank would be more beneficial than simply passing a long hose.

I wasn't comparing passing a tank to donating a long hose. I was simply stating that at some point after donating the hose, exiting the overhead environment back into the blue (also meaning once things have settled down) I MIGHT pass the tank off to the person that's currently breathing from it. Specifically once we're doing any decompression stops of any length I would possibly pass the tank off to the person just like I would a deco gas if someone had a failure of that gas and my use of that gas was complete, I pass that tank to them.

If you read my posts Rob, I am not recommending tank passing over long hose donation. This is why my first post on here clearly states that I have two long hoses and why. I was mearly stating that at SOME POINT after the OOG situation (after long hose deployment) that there can be a possibility for passing a tank. I agree with those who stated something along the line of making an already complex situation worse by passing bottles off....get a breathable reg in their mouth and GTFO.

regarding the original question posed about hose lengths, i'm curious to know how folks have their regs configuring, specifically the ports/position of their hoses on the first stages.

i have Apeks DST first stages, and i am finding the inflator hose on my left tank to be one that am am still adjusting length and position. so far, the most comfortable is to route the hose down then curve it back up to the inflator. i can post pics later if anyone wants to see.

just wondering what the rest of you do.

My inflator hose also goes down then loops back up to the inflator. It is only 9 -12" not sure. I have my Power inflator running up from the bottom. My 1st staged ate MK10's and have a rotating turret

I use a 32" on the left tank looped around the back of my neck on a necklace and a 7' on the right side

I use 14" inflator on the left because my inflator comes out the bottom of my rig with the dump valve at the top. I have a 14" dry suit hose coming off the right bottle routed under my harness and over the chest strap.

I have it routed in this way so their are no hoses on the back of my body to damage when squeezing through tight spots, all inflation hoses are routed inside the harness for protection. This also allows me just enough slack to unclip both bottles and place them in front of me without having to do anything other than unclip a single butterfly snap on each tank.

After tweaking a bit, following the sidemount class, the following now seems to work best for me:

Right bottle:
6" SPG hose run down along the tank
7' long reg hose looped behind my neck on a right angle swivel

Left bottle:
6" SPG hose run down along the tank
22" hose w/ right angle swivel necklaced (tried a 28" around my neck as well - didn't like both regs looped behind me)
15" inflator hose (tried a 9", and it distorted placement of the inflator)

Do you have reversible or Poseidon regulators? I'm not sure how the routing would work otherwise?

Actually, I did consider putting my Apeks XTX50 on the left tank (which is reversible). However, decided I'd rather keep the Atomic B2's I have on both tanks for now (however, that may change -- I like both regs, and using one of each may help with the reg/tank "situational awareness").

The 22" hose coming off the left bottle is *not* looped around my neck... only the long hose from the right bottle, so the 22" is plenty of length. It's on a right angle swivel, hanging off the necklace, so it's not unwieldy at all, and actually gives me more slack for head movement than I need. The minor excess loop it creates just hangs down in front of the left shoulder strap, out of the way of everything else (and it's a MiFlex, so it tends to just lay where it's placed, even when charged). I've actually considered trying a 20", for additional streamlining.

It's a work in process, so I'm sure I"ll be continuing to tweak as the rig "settles in."

I see you're in Birmingham -- if you're ever heading to Blue Water, PM me. I go there often, for the very purpose of working out the little kinks. I'd be happy to show you how it's rigged.

Would it be reasonable, in your opinion, to use a 5' hose instead of the 22" hose (not wrapped as you have stated) on the left tank or would the excess hose cause an issue? I'd like to be able to share air from either tank.

Perhaps Rob (Dive-aholic) will chime in on that. I'm relatively new to SM, and wouldn't be speaking from experience. My question would be, however, is why would you need to donate from either tank? I've heard of some that do use long hoses for both bottles, but I never understood the need.

If you have a long hose on each tank, you can donate whichever regulator you're breathing from, just like in back mount. I haven't set my tanks up that way, but I can understand the reluctance to change something as basic and important as how you react to an OOG diver. (UTD's solution is the gas block they have both tanks feeding into, which introduces some potential problems of its own.)
