My siblings and parents overruled my choice for a beach vacation and have instead booked all of us on a one week vacation in Wintergreen, VA. My family is great but they drive me nuts so I am going to need a place where they can't reach me.

Does anyone know if there is there any inland diving sites in the area such as a lake or quarry? We'll me there in the first week of August 2011. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

One of the best quarrys around is not to far from there, Lake Rawlings has a scuba center on site and typically has decent water temps and usually 25 to 50 ft viz

By that time, the water should be good and warm. My in-laws did this once to us, the whole family in a cabin. It NEVER happened again. Since that trip, I have said no to every family vacation that they suggested. Ain't no way in hell, I would spend another of my weekends with that many people and under one roof. Axes are not that sharp. :D

Good luck and have fun.

I live near Wintergreen and can tell you there's no convenient diving nearby of which I'm aware (unfortunately). Rawlings is my home quarry and would be about 2.5 hours away. Millbrook in northern VA might be slightly closer, MapQuest shows it approximately 2.25 hours but I've never been there. So, the diving could be done, but it might be a long day.

If you're interested in some non-diving activities, there's lots of good hiking in the area, in fact there's an Appalachian Trail crossing less than a mile from the entrance to Wintergreen. Pretty sure the cell reception in that area is lacking . Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, is only about a half hour away in Charlottesville. Well worth a day trip IMO.

Just a few options off the top of my head, let me know if you would like any more suggestions.

Hey thanks for the info. I'm not surprised about the diving. Bummed but not surprised. If you learn of anything else, such as a meteorite crashes near by creating a huge deep warm watered lake teeming with amazing freshwater fish, awesome sharks, maybe some huge wrecks (if it's not too much to ask) please let me know.

I'll do the trail and Monticello. 17 people in one house will be a bit too much. Maybe I'll pack the tent too!

Seventeen people in one house. Holy Moly. Rawlings does have camping facilities and cabins to rent for a day or two. Wednesdays used to be half price day also. Even though it is a 2.5 hour drive, if you get two days of diving in, it would be worth the drive. There is also an inexpensive motel, The Nottaway, only a few miles from the Quarry. Not many places to eat though.

Here is a link to check out. This quarry is not that far from Wintergreen and it is run by Kathy's Scuba in Harrisonburg. You could call the shop and inquire. Good luck with the family thing.

TomG, do you have current information on Fishersville? It was my understanding that it's been closed for diving for some time. I haven't been around the shop lately, so maybe it's open again and I hadn't heard. Would be great if so.
