Hey guys,

Getting back into diving and looking at wetsuits. I'll be diving in South Florida (Ft. Laud, Miami and Key Largo). Not sure whether to simply get a dive skin, a 1mm or 3mm suit. Don't want to get cold and also want to avoid rubbing up against anything that might injure me.

Anyone willing to offer some guidance on this?

Hi! Well first off when will you be diving here, what temperature water do you normally dive in, and how easily do you get cold? I get cold pretty easily and am still diving in my 7mm on the deeper dives and on French Reef and the Benwood because they are known to be chilly. The rest of our shop is in 5mm right now but we all move to 3mm in the middle of the summer when the temp gets to be in the mid to high 80s. I think 3mm are the best suit because you can wear them pretty much throughout the year and just layer on top of them for added warmth. Def want to wear something though because we have quite a bit of fire coral here.

If i were you i would look at a 3mm full suit at a minimum for the winter(temps can get a little chilly. Summer time is board shorts and a t shirt. As far as protection from rubbing up against things, just dont rub up against things.....If you touch it, you kill it, and that is not a responsible way to dive.

I'm thinking a 3mm as well. When I dove in April, I wore a 5mm and was fine but had to peel it off once I hit the boat because I was scorching.

Could you please give a few details and perhaps some links to explain just exactly what you are speaking about here?

We had a good discussion of this a few years ago and if we could list things that are just flat out untrue about this subject; "if you touch it, you kill it" is flat out untrue!
