Greetings Mike whether SMB, DSMB, or just plan SM there are specific differences in their use and deployment.
It is very wise and essential to learn these few rules when looking into using these.
Is it a emergency device only?
Is it for redundant lift?
Is it to help mark your position, while diving or at the end?

There are more questions I am sure but the specific intended use will help determine what marker, SS, lift bag will suit your purpose.
As for choice of reel or form of deployment, intended use and preference are the two factors.

I would suggest that you try both types of reels, spools / reel to decide what works best for you.
Be sure to train with these devices and do not expect to be able to deploy this device with out practice perfectly.
It takes plenty of practice to perfect this skill.
Make sure to seek out another buddy, mentor, DM to get you started and keep you safe as there are risks involved.
I have witnessed some of the craziest entanglements form practicing this skill.

I hope this has at least given you some food for thought.
If you question any of the advice please PM me and I will discuss it at length.
Dive safe and have fun training!

CamG Keep diving....Keep training....Keep learning!

Let's not generalize Andy...

:eyebrow:

Let me re-phrase that....

In other locations, i.e. the USA, it is a neglected skill within core recreational scuba curriculums. This is wrong.

I'll base that generalization on the fact that most European agencies/clubs include DSMB deployment within their entry level and progressive training. ;)

Lets get the colour right too....Orange == all is well. Yellow == Help!

And make sure that the boat crew knows whatever convention you're using if this is not known to be "the standard" where you dive - this is NOT the convention here in the US.

No but it is in the rest of the world. In the same way the US reverses the IALA light combinations for marine navigation.
