People also talk about the diving at Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Grand Cayman is a popular destination, with a rep. for being pricey (like with food). It might help folks advise you to better understand your frame-of-reference.

1.) You've got a bunch of dives, but where? What are you comparing it to, potentially?

2.) Do you plan to stay at a land resort/hotel & go out daily on a 2-tank dive boat charter, or do a live-aboard, or make a one day stop as part of a cruise ship excursion?

3.) Do you mainly do boat dives, or is a shore dive important?

4.) Do you need non-diving activities like casinos, night life, nature hikes, etc...? Are you traveling with non-divers who need these things?

5.) Are there other places you're considering going that you might want to compare it to? Such as Bonaire, Cozumel, St. Thomas or St. Croix?

I had a 2-tank cruise ship dive excursion in Grand Cayman & enjoyed it quite a bit.

Richard.

Yes, one of the top 3 places I've dove.

Unbelievable water clarity, most of the island has shore-accessible deep walls. Lots of turtles, tarpon, rays and larger pelagics - as well as the occasional shark (we saw 2 all week).

And the small stuff isn't bad either, we saw cleaning stations, and lots of fish at sites like the aptly named Aquarium. There are sites like Big Tunnel where the coral is so overgrown it's formed an overhead obstructed "tunnel" There's also several easily accessible wrecks.

Hanging out over the North Wall is an experience. IIRC it's a 6000' vertical drop. The water is an eerie blue color. And Stingray City is the most fun dive you'll do in 15'.

Yes there is good diving in Grand Cayman. Better in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
Are you on a cruise ship, land based, there for a day, a week or longer?

My wife and I just got back from a week in Grand Cayman also. We stayed at the Sunshine Suites resort. The diving was simply outstanding. We had a car for a couple days, so we did some shore diving from Sunset House and Eden Rock/Devils Grotto. The swim-thru's at Eden Rock were amazing. We did a couple other boat dives (including a night dive) with RedSailSports. They were more expensive than others, but the convenience for us was worth it...the boat picked us up right on the beach. The visibility was easily 100+ and we saw all kinds of fish, lobster, sea turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, etc. I havnt done a lot of carribean diving, but the one thing I noticed is that the reefs and corals werent as colorful as the diving I did in Aruba. I would definitely go back.

I'll be heading to Grand Cayman on a cruise ship in late December; thinking about taking my son (age 14) with me on a fairly shallow dive - it'd be his first blue-water experience. Any recommendations as to who to dive with and where to dive? What are the water temps like in late December?

Thanks,
Matt
