havent read all the replies, but I've flown a good amount in the last 3 years, and have never had anything extra done to me. Wife did once. And just because all this stuff is up and running, still doesnt mean you will be scanned / patted anyway. Not EVERYONE is checked.

And as far as the the whole "not screening til you get to the security line" well if people are in an uproar now, can you IMAGINE what the hell they would do if they had to let their car get searched, them get searched etc etc to even go and meet someone at the airport? People that have an issue now, their heads would explode if they had to go thru more screening if they werent even flying.

So your defense is that it could be worse?

I recently had to have my prostate checked........perhaps I should sue for sexual harassment.

I investigated allegations of child abuse and neglect for over 25 years. Touching someone in private areas can be sexual abuse/harassment or not depending on the motivation and gratification or lack thereof involved for the person doing the touching. I really really dont think that there are a lot of TSA folks just salivating at the thought of touching you people. So the real problem here isnt the touching but how you feel about the touching.

If the media would present this in a different matter I suspect that many folks currently up in arms would simply accept that it is just one more hassle involved with flying and take it pretty much in stride. As we should. The more we accept that it is necessary, and if they save only ONE life but it is yours or one of your loved ones you will suddenly feel it WAS necessary, and cooperate the faster the lines will move and the less hassle it will be.

So if one is incapable of emotions (either toucher or touchee) there is no sexual abuse/harassment?

its not the tsa its the pc in everything we do. profile profile profile piss people off thats ok i would rather be pissed off and safe than pissed off and at risk. I will fly and I will endure the tsa as a matter of fact I have already done that. but there will come a time we need to stop powder puffing and take back our place in this world as a super power not a super sissie thanks to all those who would choose comfort over freedom

I suggest your statement is a misrepresentation. I'd bet it would be more correct to state that you recently chose to have your prostrate checked.

And wait. That is another hiding place we have yet to deal with --- for your own safety of course.

While I wouldn't cancel a dive trip because of the new security measures (going on one Saturday in fact), I do think it's a sad state of affairs. Moreso I think it's sad that, even when faced with the facts, so many people are still willing to have their 4th Amendment rights taken away for the illusion of safety.

Since 9/11 we've had 3 major terrorist scares involving the US and airplanes. Richard Reid (shoebomber, flight from France to Miami), Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (underwear bomber, Amsterdam to Detroit), and the recent package scare (Yemen origin via England and Dubai, heading to Chicago). The last one, obviously, has to do with package screening instead of passenger screening. Both bombers were subdued by passengers and crew, and would not have been picked up by the new scanning methods.

I can't find the # on the FAA site for international arrivals, but they do have the statistics for number of domestic departures. From October, 2001 to August 2010 there were 82,734,955 domestic commercial passenger flights in the US. Of these we've seen 0 reported aborted or succesful terrorist attempts. While certainly possible that the TSA has kept any attempts quiet, it seems highly unlikely (given publicity of the other cases and the fact that ANY stopped attempt would justify the increased security measures). Hell, the tin foil hat brigade expects a false flag attempt soon to justify the current TSA actions.

So the question becomes, have you sacrificed your rights to stop anything? We have a Bill of Rights in this country for a reason -- in fact without it the Constitution itself would most likely not have been ratified.

Some of you, understandably, don't care about the TSA taking away your 4th Amendment rights -- but if you feel that way I'd ask you to think about what happens when they take away a right you cared about? People who don't own guns rarely care about the 2nd Amendment. And those who don't get into trouble with the law (or get called for jury duty) don't need to worry about Fifth, Sixth or Seventh.

Everytime I fly it annoys me to no end that I have to take my shoes, jacket and belt off. I'm not a terrorist. Now I may be scanned by a machine that several impressive-sounding places (Columbia University, University of California, etc.) are telling me may be irradiating me, may be saving the pictures of me ("they" say they don't, but they obviously don't use Google either), or I can be subjected to an invasion of my personal space. But ... I'm not a terrorist. I'm being treated like I'm one, though. And that's the whole point -- with nonexistant threats we've been reduced to having to get grandma groped to get anywhere. To me, at least, that's a pretty crappy legacy to take from 9/11.

Although not flying isn't a choice for me, neither is acting like a sheep ready to give away pieces of who I am and what I believe in -- for any reason, much less an unproven one. So to the original poster I'd still go to Bonaire if I were you, but before you go perhaps you should write a quick note to your congressperson letting them know how you feel?

Here is my issue with the whole situation. I don't care if 81% of the people have no issue with these scanners, probably 81% disagree with the burning of the flag but that is a constitutionally protected form of free speech. So be it. Our government is jumping through their ass to convey constitutional rights to these same terrorists that are the cause of ours being eroded. They didn't even question the "Christmas Bomber" until they read him his Miranda rights. The President, the HEAD of DHS, TSA and every TSO took a sworn oath to protect and DEFEND the Constitution. Last I checked the 4th amendment to that document had not been revoked. The government just can't decide that they are going to take away constitutional rights, Lincoln tried it and it was over turned by the supreme court. Yes I care about terrorist actions against civilian aviation, but I care more about our constitutional rights. Purchasing an airline ticket is not probable cause for a unwarranted search. If a bomb dog alerts on my baggage, or I set off the alarm on the metal detector, or something is seen in my carry on, then you have probable cause and do what you need to do, otherwise leave me alone. I am also real tired of people calling TSO's Nazi's, child molesters and perverts, they are not. Misguided and under trained granted, Nazi's No.
I have the un-nerving feeling that the next attack won't be on a plane but in the terminal itself. Then what are they going to do. Search every car, bus, and train going to the airport.
