Is that a statement of the darkness of the wall looming out of the murk, or is the water really that dark due to the composition of the wall?

Sorry about my English, but if I do understand you correct, then the dark/bad vis is only next to the wall.
However, when getting bit away from the wall, like few feets of it- vis was getting better.
At that point, while been in depth of 50', when I turned my back down so my face was up and I could even see the light which comes from the surface, with all those wonderful sun rays' reflection. It was awesome !!!

Oh, good! I have to get in in next week, and I'm not looking forward to cold darkness . . .

First let me describe the wall. It defines the south side of a boat ramp that was cut into the side of a hill and is now submerged. We are at the top of the wall when we reach it from shore. With the vis like it is these days the lake bed turns from a sandy tan color to black as the bottom seems to drop out of the lake bed. You feel like you are staring into an abyss. Even though I know the bottom is only about 25 feet below me it takes me a second or two to calm myself before descending into the darkness. I turn 180 degrees so I can look at the wall to keep a visual reference to monitor my rate of descent. It's dark because of the absense of light. :D

'nother question - is Vista point ground suitable for a dolly?

No. The path to the shore from the parking lot is a bit arduous in places and starts out pretty steep. This year a friend cut "steps" into the hill side for the first few feet. That made it a bit easier to negotiate.

I've tried gearing up at my van and ambling down the hill and I've tried carrying my stuff down the hill and setting up a base camp by the water's edge. I've even tried just taking my tanks down and doing my surface intervals up at the van. I much prefer gearing up at my van. To me it's easier to wear my gear than to carry it. Yeah, I know I'm still carrying it but it's easier.

I hope I didn't put you off from the lake. There are easier places to get in than Vista Point. But the vis there is almost always better there than anyplace else at the lake unless you're diving off a boat.

If you're going to be at the lake on Saturday, shoot me a PM. There's almost always a group diving the lake. You can critique my side mount set up (if the rest of my stuff from Dive Rite comes in).

:( Darn it, I'm working Saturdays these days. I can come up for Sunday only. I don't know where we're diving, yet. You're welcome to look at my stuff -- I can't offer a critique, but I can pass on things Dive-aholic has mentioned.

I hope to see you in the sidemount thread!

Dove Vista Point Sunday: Every past Sunday as well. Yesterday the vis in the shallows was 5-10 feet max. Below 38 feet the vis drops to zero-3 feet and opens and closes. Water temps in the shallows is 74 suunto degrees and in the deeps 63F below 51 feet.

The water level is coming up. Over the last week it was up 3 or 4 feet.

PD

Hey, Sand Sharks; if you haven't heard it lately -- THANK YOU for all these useful lake condition reports! :)

I'm looking at this map: Lake Pleasant 11 x 17.

Where is Vista Point? I see an "HC" sound of Honeymoon Cove -- a friend thinks that is Vista Point.

Anyone?:idk:

The point is the "finger" that sticks out into the lake just north of Waddell Cove. However, there is a cove between Honeymoon Cove and Waddell Cove that is traditionally referred to as Vista Point. Smack in the middle of that cove is a picnic table (on the shore) that most people dive from.

Right now the lake is down considerably. There is a football field (approx) between the parking lot and waterline. All downhill/uphill. It is hikeable, but no fun.
