I'm female, and whilst I have a partner he does not dive. Though a lot of women seem to dive with their spouses and there are a lot less women diving than men (particularly in winter) in my experience so I didn't have many female dive buddies for a long while.

However met a bunch by now, got three buddies who are either single or their spouses don't dive (two are tech divers too), so they are around! But they are less common, particularly at more technical diving. I've been on cave trips and been the only women around at a site out of about 15 divers... Doesn't bother me though as I tend to get on much better with men than women. I wouldn't sign up to something like a 'women's dive trip' because I find them contrived and I just prefer gender to be ignored.

So, in summation. No to female dive teams...gender should be ignored. Got it...

I've dived with teams that are all female because those were the people who happened to be free. I would not sign up to a trip or dive promoted as being organised based around gender.

Got it?

Some of us would just feel guilty leaving our diving-loving-spouses at home to go dive with the girls while we don't hesitate to leave them at home when shopping or having girl's night out.

I read an article once that said that male divers outnumber female divers roughly 2:1 in every country except Japan, where that ratio is reversed.

It speculated but couldn't offer any good reasons why this might be so, and which still accounted for the Japan anomaly (It did do a tour of the usual rubbish ("macho sport", "gear too heavy", "don't like to get messy"), but to be fair the article then dismissed all that as pretty improbable). I wonder in the US if is the proportion of divers who are spearfishing skews it (hunting not being as popular with the ladies)?

Although I am sure the article probably led to a surge of young male dive instructors seeking jobs in Japan.

What would really raise an eyebrow for me would be two chicks stoked an outfitted to do some spearfishing. Not that they can't hunt just seems alittle more like a guy thing?

Most of my favorite dive buddies are female in part due to their excellent SAC rates and in part because they are trained professionals who love diving and enjoy learning about the critters from me.

I see female buddy teams out here at the Casino Point Dive Park, although not as many as of the male persuasion. You should have been diving 40-50 years ago when I started... there were very few females active in diving period.

I've seen lots of female buddy pairs on trips to Asia. Many of the women in countries like Japan traditionally lived with their parents until they married and often had more disposable income than the males because of it. Of course that is changing too.

I was able to dive with some of my female dive buddies while dh and I were living in different states. Needless to say, he was quite jealous! I have more dives than him now, and he hates it. It doesn't matter if I'm buddied with a female or male diver, but if I were to tell the hubby I'm diving next weekend with the girls, he would be quite jealous.

This is just my experience, so take it for what it is.

I've suggested for women that I met on dive boats to go diving with each other and establish permanent buddy teams. Most of them said that they'd prefer to go with their significant others. Some said that they'd prefer to be with men buddies for just in case a rescue needed to be done.

I tried to convince them that well trained female divers are just as good as well trained male divers, but somehow they still prefer to be with a male buddy. Talk about setting back women's lib. Perhaps some of the ladies could explain to me as to why these women would feel more comfortable with men buddies?
