Dry suit weather is just around the corner again so it is time I asked this question. what can I do to get rid of a strong gag reflex? My drysuit neck seal is so loose it leaks and still causes me untold embaressment when I suit up. Anything on my neck makes me gag and if I don't pull the seal away from my neck it causes me to puke. It is never a problem in the water. Sometimes my wet suit is a problem but nothing like my drysuit. Please tell me there is a cure. I have a new neck seal on order (because the existing one is leaking ) and I am afraid it will be an even bigger problem. HELP PLEASE! Am I the only one with this problem?

I understand the feeling, but I don't think my drysuit gag response is as bad as yours.

The neck seal needs to be tight enough not to leak but not too tight to cut off circulation to your head. Some people are more sensitive to finding the right balance than others.

On a shore dive, I delay donning the upper half of my drysuit until everyone else's equipment is ready to go.
On a pitching dive boat, I do the same thing...aware that I may have to allow some time to puke over the side before donning my rig and splashing in.
My buddies are aware of how the combination of seasickness + drysuit neck seal creates issues for me.

Something to consider is trying a properly-fitting neoprene neck seal. They last longer and are more comfortable than latex neck seals, but they do tend to leak a little more easily.

I thought you were looking for a gag to pull on someone. Like asking your buddy to check your exhaust valve. Right after you just passed gas.

I have this aversion to stuff being around my neck as well. Cannot sleep with any kind of shirt on. Will wear a tie when I have to but tie it so the top button can stay loose. If you have no issues once you are in the water my only advice is to try and gear up so that there is little delay in getting wet. Or eat stuff that is not too gross if it has to come back up.

Get some turtlenecks and wear them around the house all day long. Break the psychological effect once and for all. When your new neck seal comes in, cut off a wide portion of the old one and wear that around the house, too. Better to at least TRY breaking it than accommodating it for life.

I had to stop at that....It's dry suit weather ALL YEAR as far as I'm concerned!


anyway...I hate stuff on my neck as well...but ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
