Yeah yeah yeah...I'll see your 70-ft vis and raise you a few kelp beds. :crafty:

I've experienced 100ft vis - in Belize, in Bali, in Bora Bora (and that's just the B's!). ;) I agree that is some fantastic diving. But that doesn't take away from what we have here. The first time you see the sea lions frolicking in a kelp bed, with the sun dappling down through the canopy refracted by the particulates giving the scene a murky surreallity, you'll recognize that it may be different, but it is no less enjoyable, and in fact has its own magical charm that can't be found in clear blue tropical waters.

That's a very nice description of a dive I hope to make before I no longer blow bubbles. Hey, you should be a writer...:)

...
That said, have plans to try Pt Dume this weekend. I'm less than optimistic...
Big, big waves the last couple of days, very happy surfers. Surfers still parking on my street and going down to Big Dume near dark last night. "Less than optimistic" sounds optimistic

Garsh, thanks! (You know I AM a writer....right?? :D)

I just read about the huge surf along the SoCal Coast, extending from OC up through Ventura. Methinks nobody's going to be diving on any of our beaches in the very near future... :depressed:

Rainer, if you're going to try diving Pt. Dume this weekend...be careful!

I wanted to get wet this weekend and try out a new mask, so went snorkeling off Big Dume both days. Smaller waves on Saturday, so-so visibility, so just swam out to off the sea lion rookery. Bigger waves today, but went down the steps to big Dume to snorkel around the corner. Decent visibility so I decided to snorkel out to the pinnacles. Despite the waves, the viz was very good (I could see the bottom most of the way to the pinnacles, and probably 15 to 20 ft. horizontal visibility at the surface), and very clear by the pinnacles. Lots of big fish out there! The current was running counter to the normal direction, so I kept going to westward beach then walked back to collect my stuff on the Dume side. Today would have been a great day to dive the pinnacles
