Now try it staying off the bottom in a full wet suit. One thing that you'll find is that a weight integrated BC will make it much more difficult.

Here we go again with having to call PADI, woops ... write PADI for yet another standards clarification. I wonder if it is within standards to use a BP/w then?

Do standards require and exposure suit and weightbelt?

The standards do not require exposure suit and weightbelt. If one is wearing an exposure suit and/or weightbelt those are not exchanged.

".....by exchanging all scuba equipment (except exposure suits
and weights) with a buddy....."

Hope that answers your question. Nothing in the standards that says you cannot use a BP/w.

"....Buoyancy control device (BCD) with tank mount or separate backpack, and low pressure inflator". That is it for definition.

We have one DMC who routinely uses a BP/w.

If you read the requirements carefully you will note that it requires the use of "one air supply". It doesn't require that it is that of either of the students doing the exercise. Having a tank and long hose weighted to the bottom would make the job a little easier. My instructor pointed this out AFTER my buddy and I completed the job...the SOB:rofl3:

Actually, that wouldn't work & would be a standards violation as the team eventually has to do a swim while buddy breathing. (See below from the current Instructor Manual):

"Skill 2 — Equipment Exchange
In confined water, have divemaster candidates demonstrate the ability to solve unanticipated problems underwater by exchanging all scuba equipment (except exposure suits and weights) with a buddy while sharing a single regulator second stage, earning at least a 3 as described in the evaluation criteria.

Orient candidates to procedures for sharing a single regulator second stage, including exhalation between breaths and not covering the purge button as the regulator is passed back and forth.

Give buddy teams less than five minutes to discuss the exercise. Have candidates
begin sharing a single regulator second stage in water too deep in which to stand, exchange equipment and continue sharing air until they reach shallow water."

Perhaps you forgot about the BB while swimming part?

I do not think it is a violation at all.

In confined water, have divemaster candidates demonstrate the ability to solve unanticipated problems underwater,

This argument has been discussed a number of times.
Unanticipated Problems can mean lots of things. An instructor is encouraged through the whole of the dive master course to simulate real conditions. This is obviously simulating low or no visibility.

??? Can you elaborate as to what you are referencing?

I was talking about olphart's assertion that "having a tank and long hose weighted to the bottom would make the job a little easier" when doing the equipment exchange.

Remember, the standards are clear as to what is supposed to happen during the EE. You cannot add "unanticipated problems", it's merely to see how the Candidate HANDLES unanticipated problems by putting them through this particular skill set.

FYI, with the exception of "(except exposure exposure suits and weights)" the ENTIRE section is in bold in the Manual. (I just changed my post to reflect this fact.) This means you are obligated to follow this as "PADI Standards", not "PADI Suggestions".

My mistake, I have misread you, I thought you had said blackened Mask was a violation.
I do agree, that having a tank on a long hose is a violation. yes.
My reference was the blackened mask. I do not believe this would be a violation.

Unless diving with a blackened mask becomes standard diving practice, then yes, making the DMCs wear blackened masks during this exercise would be a standards violation.

Again, I remind you that you cannot ADD to the exercise, especially with regard to increasing its difficulty.
