Some would be ready to teach at 100 dives while many, many others are unfit to teach even after thousands of dives. Many instructors just don't have the sense God gave a goose and they certainly pose a risk to their students largely due to their hubris. If you "don't get it", I'm afraid that even 30 months of training may fail to make you a competent instructor. If you do "get it", then 30 days might be sufficient. It depends on the person and their motivation for excellence.

As Cap335 indicated, it's a two step thing. And I witnessed it.

I did my advanced and nitrox courses there. My instructor frequently "subbed me out" to the students who were mid way through the 30 days. I remember the conversations vividly:

Me: "So, (Instructor/Student), how long have you been diving?"
(Instructor/Student): "Oh, a little over two weeks."
Me: -- bug eyed and speechless --

How do you respond to that?

Me: (To Manager) Can I get a refund?

It's supposed to be 100 dives to *start* the padi IDC, no?
No, 100 dives to take the IE. You can begin the IDC with 60 which is the exit requirement for DM.

You can take the IE with 61 if the course director allows it.

Its 100 to be put into teaching status following succesful completion of the IE.

The "OW to Instructor" vs "AOW to Instructor" is simply semantics. OP probably means "You are OW certified and they take you to Instructor" and the website means "We train you starting at AOW to Instructor". Both are correct. For the math inclined: (OW,Instructor] vs [AOW, Instructor]

The program is an interesting one. I can see someone who has been diving for a long time and deciding to become an instructor being a good candidate for this.

Actually, the program title is AOW to Instructor, but the requirements say you just have to be OW. AOW is just a few dives anyway. I don't see that it makes any difference.

Well I do not see this thread as being worthy of discussion; I think it should be closed if not removed.

I don't see where you get this conclusion from. Whether you think the program is worthwhile or not, there are people being certified as instructors this way. Why would it not be worthy of discussion?

The only way this makes any sense is if you look at the last four words of the Chairman of the Board's SB Profile Bio; Forty Fathom Grotto Guide.
What? I can't comment because I became a Grotto Guide under the previous administration (Hal Watts)? I have known Hal from the early 70s and worked on his car while I was in High School. I was privileged to have Hal be the one who oriented me and made me a Grotto Guide. He might look like the Crypt Keeper, but don't underestimate the man.

I believe that the program now being taught is SDI/TDI, but I am not certain. I know that it's not PADI. Who will be certain is LouMa as he starts working there Monday Morning. I do know that there will be a complete revision of their instructor course and that Lou will probably be able to have some input on that. Lou is a NAUI and SDI/TDI instructor and has the highest ethics. I would trust him teaching my kids to Scuba.

I like the direction Capt Ray Black has taken the Grotto. He has cleaned it up and made it look professional. I talked to him today and there are some major changes that will be rolled just around DEMA time. I am sure that he and the Grotto will do great.

Or you could just spend the $4300 on diving
Heck for $4300 you could probably get an instructor to yourself for three weeks at some tropical dive resort :p

The Commercial Diving Academy will take you from "never been on a regulator" to instructor in 30 days. I can't believe that's even legal.

Well, the title of the above linked page is "Scuba Instructor Training, NAUI Instructor School, Become A Diving Instructor."

If some Thailand Instructor Factory was the subject of a well worded thread starting op, what would your opinion be of the statement "never been on a regulator to instructor in 30 days"? :idk:

I suspect no one here will think this is a good idea because you would end up being an instructor with about 30 dives.

OK, I just did a yahoo search for "dive instructor requirements"; click on the third listing on the search page (The Way The World Learns To Dive - padi.com); in the center of the page is a section titled PADI Scuba Diving Courses; upper right sub-section is Professional Courses; click on third link (Become a Scuba Instructor); scroll down to Prerequisites;

PADI:

This post is now bracketed with ignorant drivel. :idk:
