Key West - A Utah man is dead after he had trouble upon surfacing from a dive offshore of Key West, on the Vandenberg

Detective Kim Trullender said 51 year old ###, of Orem, Utah was visiting Key West alone, with the goal of diving the Vandenberg On Thursday, he was set to reach that goal, going on a dive on board the dive vessel Sea Eagle. He told other divers on board that he'd been involved in a motorcycle accident with his girlfriend and the girlfriend was killed. "It was apparently their dream to dive the Vandenberg together," said Detective Trullender. "After she died, he decided to dive it himself, in her memory," he said.

A Utah man died on Thursday upon surfacing from a dive at the Vandenberg wreck seven miles off Key West. Elwood Carter, 51, of Orem, Utah, apparently is the sixth dive- or snorkeling-related death in the Keys this year.

He was visiting Key West alone with the goal of diving the 520-foot Vandenberg, one he and his girlfriend had, said Becky Herrin, spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

"He told other divers on board [the Sea Eagle dive boat] that he'd been involved in a motorcycle accident with his girlfriend and the girlfriend was killed," Herrin said.

"It was apparently their dream to dive the Vandenberg together," said Detective Kim Trullender. "After she died, he decided to dive it himself in her memory."

Herrin says Carter was diving at a depth of 92 feet. According to witnesses, he surfaced about 11:30 a.m. and began to have difficulty as he removed his equipment, and he passed out on the surface. He was pulled into the vessel and two paramedics who just happened to be aboard began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and began giving him oxygen.

Carter was transported to the U.S. Coast Guard station in Key West, where an ambulance picked him up. He was transported to Lower Keys Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Carter reportedly was an experienced diver but had not been diving in several years.

Even though we do not know if this was actually a contributing factor, it does remind us all that we need to keep our dive skills fresh or freshen them up before tackling a challenging dive such as the Vandenberg.
