Mayan Princess Beach and Dive Resort
West Bay Beach, Roatan
Bay Island, Honduras.

I was at Mayan Princess Beach and Dive Resort for a one week dive vacation from Feb 1st to Feb 8th 2010. I had mainly chosen this resort for it’s dive center located at the resort.

First, some quick comments on the resort.

The resort’s grounds are beautifull, well maintained and my studio was beyond my expectations. Staff is efficient, always smiling and eager to please.

The only negative point would be the food … not that it was unedible, but I would give it an ¨ average ¨ note. And the ¨ A la carte ¨ restaurant is quite expensive : 36$US for lobster and 18$US for ceasar salad !!!

Enough said, let’s talk diving !!!!

Anja and Liber who are proud owners of the Mayan Divers dive center and their experienced DMs ( Carrie, Vera and Adrian ) have left no stones unturned to accommodate me for this memorable week of diving. During that week we only had 2 days of rough seas, so all the gears were packed on a bus and we went diving on the south side of the island.

During a nite dive, I witnessed something for the first time since I am diving : it’s called ¨string of pearls¨ . This is simply so amazing that I had to remind myself to breathe !!!

Here are the sites we visited, with max depth. Water temperature was 26oC for the whole week and the majority of them were wall dives.

- Herbie’s fantasy, 14,9 m.
- Sea Quest, 17,8 m.
- Mandy’s eel garden, 15,6 m.
- Blue chanel, 10,3 m.
- Fish den, 27,3 m.
- Melissa’s reef, 23,1 m.
- Willie’s wonder, 21,4 m.
- Willie’s wonder, 15,6 m. ( nite dive )
- Gibson’s bite, 35,6 m.
- Turtle crossing, 20,4 m.
- West end wall, 19,3 m.
- Keyhole, 27,3 m.
- Blue cave, 21,5 m.
- Eagle ray spots, 23,7 m.
- Marylin’s front porch, 20,4 m.

We saw green moray eels, green turtes, 1 manta ray, NO sharks !!! and all the usual Caribbean fish.

One funny thing: we saw 5 lionfish during the whole week and everybody seemed to be amazed by this fish …

Roatan is so far lucky not being invaded by lionfish !!!

Diving with Mayan Divers is very affordable, and I am looking forward to my returning very very soon.

If you would like to contact them, contact Anja at anja@mayandivers.com or check out their web site Mayan Divers, Roatan Diving, Small groups, PADI Courses, eLearning, personal service, fun and safety.

One of the reasons you saw few lionfish is the huge amount of effort many dive operators are putting in to culling this invasive species.

My colleagues at Coconut Tree got 6 in just one day recently. The Lionfish is a reality that is here to stay, dive pros are going to have to continue this effort for many years to come if the island is not to be overrun!

Keep up the good work people!

You didn't dive Mary's Place or the Prince Albert?!?!?!?
Aren't those the two MUST SEE dives on Roatan?

Methinks the South side dive sites alluded to didn't make SharkTamer's above posted list of the week's twelve dives... yet. (Some North/West ops utilize sites along the South from the Western tip to the Airport, most of which are not on the radar screen for those doing regular daily South side diving from a base of operations located in that zone)

Very few North side dive-ops dive the Prince Albert. It's another 20 minutes further East past Mary's Place.

Instead of focusing on "must dive" sites, consider what the South side is known for... little colorful critters hidden in the shallow, Sunlit walls. That's the really cool "must see" kind of stuff. You can do this at any dive site from Mary's Place all the way East to Calvin's Crack.

Let your eyes and excitement go past the unique architecture of the long, dark & deep chasm of Mary's Place. Get beyond the easy accessibility of the intact, upright very shallow wreck of the Prince Albert.

Study small areas of the wreck, or concentrate on areas of the wall that have the most life- not a penetration of the wreck or gawking at the dark spaces of the reef- they are seemingly lifeless when you compare it to the shallow Sunny stuff.

Stay shallow and go very slowly- that's the "must see" way of the South Side.

I had chosen Roatan to go dive The Odyssey, but Anja told me it is now broken in 3 parts and tilted on it's side, so they don't really dive it no more.

An since I was the only one of the group who wanted to dive wrecks, we didn't do any !!!

Well that kinda sucks!
How many divers in your group most days?

Sorry to hear you didn't get to dive the Odyssey. I was on Roatan in Dec/Jan. We dove the Odyssey. It was a fun dive. Someone wasn't very honest with you.
