Anyone else get caught in the Jan 2 "Wet Runway" fiasco? Curious if anyone had luck getting anything out of Delta (reimbursement for hotel, miles, etc.)?

Don't tease us, tell us the story, will'ya?

We flew out of Roatan on Jan 2. No problems. But that was on Continental.

OK, like many with negative issues you decided to join SB to bitch about something in your very first post, Please, at least give some information. If your going to take the time to sign up at least give an idea as to what happened. Maybe we were not on your Fiasco flight but we may have had similar issues that we could have warned you about.

I landed in Roatan Jan 2. After 3 attempts the 4th was a charm and finally landed. It was not the greatest weather that day. But we all landed safe and sound, and yes it was Delta.

So is Aguiness upset he/she had to circle until the pilot felt it was safe?

Fair enough...here is the full story. A bit long.

Delta has 2 flights out on Saturday's (400 and 402). On January 2 there was about a 30 minute rain shower around 1:00 P.M. It turns out that given the length of the runway the Delta jets can not take off fully loaded on a wet runway at RTB.

Flight 400 scheduled to depart at 1:30 had already taken on a full tank of gas so they needed to offload passengers to cut weight. They offered a pretty nice deal to stay on the Island for a night and fly out the next day ($800 voucher + paid hotel for the night). I would have jumped on that in a second.

Flight 402 scheduled to depart at 2:30 had not tanked up yet, so they saved weight by not filling up with gas and making a stop at Ft. Lauderdale en route to Atlanta to refuel. By the time they reworked their flight plan and made the extra stop, no one was going to make their connections. No one was offered anything.

Upon arrival in Atlanta Delta offered nothing, not even the hotel for the night. Both flights were so delayed that all passengers with connections were SOL.

I don't see a 30 minute rain shower as a major weather delay, especially since it had zero effect on Continental or Taca. More like poor planning on Delta's part flying jets with that tight of a tolerance given runway length/distance to destination.

Moral of the story...fly Continental not Delta into RTB given a choice...if only because it is a shorter flight to Houston so they have more margin for error. If Delta coughed up $50 for a night at the Best Western I would feel much better about it. I only posted this to see if any passengers have gotten anything out of Delta.

Ok, Now we have the details, as a million plus mile delta traveler I have been quite pleased but besides that there are few if any airlines that will pay for accomodations if weather was the cause of the delay. Now when we were diverted to Belize back at the end of November I can say delta paid our nice room, gave us meal vouchers and when I got home I had a voucher towards my next ticket.
My long standing belief has been that the pilot usually wants to get home as well and if he cant do it or is not comfy doing it then I am not in the position to argue. Most fine print gives a pretty good buffer zone for airlines to get you to your final destination, some just never have to deal with the fine print.
