The direct flights from Toronto to Roatan are looking pretty reasonable in price these days. Jan 4 Sunwing flight is under $600 with tax included. Looks like there is a flight every Monday for the next few months with a little variation in price every week. Anyone in the Southwest Ontario area have any other options other than the connectors out of Detroit?

From what I have read, those Sunwing flights are filling fast yet those with the AI packages are not all that pleased. While it is certainly more work for our Northern guests, there are many options to Roatan through Atlanta, Houstom, and Miami and at times Newark

Hope this does not sound overly picky, but "direct flights" mean you don't change planes, but they stop along the way. "non-stop" is just that. Direct flight with stops were more common years ago, but still are with some like Southwest.

Looks like they have non-stop flights which would be nice, and with the current security screening for flights into the US - an appealing idea, if nothing goes wrong. Charter airlines do not cooperate with real airlines in cases of need, one of the reasons I avoid charters. I picked a hypothetical date and got a price of $765. Is that USD or CND?

Sidestep.com/Kayak.com suggest Contiental flights on Saturdays for $789 USD, but I guess that would mean a change in Houston...

There are other considerations when using a Charter airline.

I'm not finding much direct out of miami. I have the choice to connect
in houston or fly direct to san pedro and connect with a flight there, not
sure which is better at this point. Probably less hassle to get the flight
direct to san pedro then a flight to the island.

There are good itineraries out of Miami. Nothing non-stop, no - which is what many advise to take when possible, but I've never had that luxury for any trip beyond Texas & Albuquerque so I've never understand why non-stop is such a holy grail? In the 80s when Frequent Flyer miles were more rewarding, I often picked itineraries with extra changes to increase my FF miles and very seldom had any problems. Today, with FF miles being not so lucrative, I have to take at least 2 flights each way to get to any good diving: Seattle, Los Angeles, North Carolina, Miami, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America - and 3 each way to Ambergris Cay or Ontario Canada and that last one involved a long car drive too, but I'd still do it again.

Anyway, when do you want to go, how much do you want to pay, and how much adventure do you want...?

I've never changed planes in San Pedo. I had a couple in my group try that once but when their flight canceled, there were not any backup flights with any airlines that their airline could endorse them to so they spent the night on the mainland and arrive in Utila by ferry the next day. I have changed in Houston many times and it's quite easy, easiest if you stick to the same airline of course.

Continental has simple itineraries thru Houston starting at $598 total, a nice price I think...

TACA, the first airline I took to Roatan which involved an airline change for me in Houston back then, has an adventure for $367 if you don't mind a ferry to Le Ceiba and an overnight there...

The prices have fluctuated a lot lately...

idive2,
If you do not mind weird hours and connections you can also get good rates through Spirit Air to San Pedro. TACA had dropped the direct/nonstop to RTB from Miami but thought they would start again, maybe not. I have flown Delta non stop from ATL since they started with little issue although due to weather about a month back we diverted to Belize and spent the night there

What a bummer. How did you get transportated from Belize to Roatan the next day? With Delta or did they go back to ATL again? Just curious.

Really wasn't a bummer for me at all, We help with my watchmans son who is going to school in Belize so I had a surprise visit with him on Delta's dime and I still had over a month on Roatan although those on a one week trip probably hated it. The Delta plane stayed at the Belize airport and the crew and all us passengers stayed at the Radisson Fort George in Belize where the Agressor and Peter Hughes boats dock, Was a nice place and mine was a waterfront room with a great view of the marina and Delta picked up the tab along with a food voucher and even sent me a pretty good credit for a future flight with them, though the food voucher only covered about half of my dinner tab. All transportation was covered and we left Belize early Sunday and I was at my home by about 10 am Sunday, the worst part was all the big stores were closed because it was election day in Honduras so i had to wait till monday to get stocked up with groceries which meant some Mac and cheese and Island style fried chicken on Sunday, which ain't all that bad in itself.

Thanks Don and RTBDiver for the comments. Yep, I checked spirit airlines.
Their flight to san pedro arrives at 1:30am or later. Not sure if this was out
of fort lauderdale or miami. They did have some very good prices on their
fares but the flight time may or may not work for me, not sure yet. I may
in fact go through Houston and then right to Roatan.
